Does anyone know if it is possible or has anyone tried upgrading an
Vista x86 install to x64?

Charlie

You can't do it. You can't do any type of upgrade for any OS from x86 to x64 as
there really isn't anything compatible between the two as one has all 32 bit
executables, and the other is nearly all 64 bit executables. You can't go the
other way either, from x64 to x86

x64 can only be a clean install. It cannot be installed from an x86 desktop
either, although both x86 and x64 can be installed from the XP Pro x64
desktop.
