BTW as far as editing boot order, this beta you can choose boot : Windows or
"Earlier" in system- properties - advanced - "Startup and Recovery" -
advanced - just like in other windows versions. My default is now
"earlier" - from the dropdown.

I've been trying to install x64 Vista - I give up.
So, I was just about to install x86 , BUT - will is mess with my x64
boot ??

Currently XP Pro on C ( SATA) and X64 on IDE ( E) , so I have 64bit
ntldr on C. I'm thinking that with Vista's boot folder I MIGHT be OK ,
but wanted to check - will I still be able to multiboot Xp Pro and
X64Pro with x86 Vista ?

I multiboot both Vista x86 and x64 on an XP Pro x64 system, but I use all
SATA drives. If there does turn out to be a boot problem it may be caused
by the PATA drive. I have read of at least one case where Vista insisted on
writing the Boot configuration data store on the PATA drive even though it
logically should have been to the drive where the base OS was installed. I
don't know anything more about it than that.

Well, I booted the x86 DVD , started the install and
went out for coffee.I just returned home and the install
is done and at a Vista logon screen. I must admit - I
panicked a bit when I saw Vista on C - but everything is OK.
I shutdown and rebooted : XP Pro on SATA is working fine.
I just took a snapshot of drive letters here and will
assign to be the same in Vista ( except C of course).
Also have to try X64 boot .

I DO have a boot folder on the PATA dated today.
I have an old boot folder on the SATA dated April
( from last x86 Beta - all files in there dated April - none from
today). So you think if I now remove the IDE drive I won't be able to
boot the SATA by itself ( as it used to) ?

I'll play with that ( not today ) and let you know.

If I do have a boot problem when IDE is removed, do you think I could I
copy the contents of the IDE boot folder to SATA ??
I would think that an x86 boot folder is the same in both beta's - just
different files/pointers ???

Make sure the partition with the Vista Boot file is the active partition on
the SATA drive before you remove the IDE (most likely is) Whatever boot.ini
is on that drive will be the one used when you select the legacy system (as
you said it did before) and finally, you may have to change the RISC entries
IF the drive orders are different than when you say it worked before. Don't
know if you have more than 1 IDE and 1 SATA. If only 1 of each, that should
be okay also.

The new boot folder is NOT on my SATA.
I have an OLD one there though from last install.
I had used Vistabootpro to remove it when last beta finished and installed
new beta to secindary ( IDE) drive.

Without speculating as to how your system is (or will be) setup (how many
and type of drives, type or number of partitions involved), no harm will be
done by trying various combinations. As to the new vs old Boot file, I
haven't seen any evidence on this site that you would have any problem
booting either 64 or 86 from either. That said, your old Boot file won't
have any changes since it was last updated. You can use VistaBootPro to
make changes you need. Just make sure that the Boot file is on the first
active partition in your boot priority.

I didn't say boot order, I said boot priority. Boot priority can only be set
in the
BIOS where you select which drive (or CD or Floppy, etc.) order the system
starts trying to find a bootable system (DOS, Window, etc)
Windows gives you the ability to select the default system to boot to. You
need to do it twice when you have legary systems, the one in the Vista Boot
and the one that is in the legacy boot.ini
