I recently downloaded the x64 version of the "final" build of Windows Vista
from MSDN. I have been unable to install the operating system either from
within my current windows XP build (32 bit) or from booting the machine with
the CD.

Windows XP Attempt:
My first attempt was to install from within Windows XP. When I did this, I
am told that setup is not a valid Win32 executable.

Bootup Attempt:
When attempting to install by booting to the CD, setup locks up. It goes
through the initial screen where it is loading data from the CD. This
finishes. Then a second screen starts to appear with a small status bar in
the lower center of the screen and, if memory serves me, the words "Microsoft
Corporation". This is faded out, and looks like it should be fading in, but
it never does. I left it in this state for about 8 hours and there was no
progress. I tried disabling everything on the motherboard that was
disablable.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Sounds like a bad burn of the .iso file. Have you tried burning it at a
lower speed? Did you validate the image before burning it?

That's the path I'm going down now. I'm not sure how to validate the
download. I'm currently downloading it on a different machine and will burn
it on a different burner. The media was free, so that could be the issue.

I downloaded with a different machine, and burnt with a different burner, but
get the same result. What do I need to do to "verify" the iso?

Update: The problem was replicated with the 32-bit version as well. I
attempted to upgrade and it failed when it was copying files. When I tried
to boot with the 32-bit media it did the same thing, locks up on the 2nd
status bar before the text fully fades in.

Regarding burning, I have so far burnt 4 DVDs that all exhibit the same
problem using 2 different burners. On the latest burn I used Nero and had it
check the burn after completion for accuracy and it gave it a clean bill of
health. This was the 32-bit version and I did not check that ISO, but I
think it's extremely improbable that a download/burn error would be injecting
this behaviour - it's too similar with enough varying paths to rule it out in
my mind.

Do you happen to have an ATI tuner card installed? Try pulling that and see
if it then installs...

I have heard that SLI setup can cause this also and that removing one card
can resolve the problem.

only Hi MidniteArrow:

I was having the same problem when transfering the ISO to a DVD
The solution was right in front of my face
I used NERO and i was clicking the incorrect key
Make sure that you click on the ISO icon and then go to the ISO tab to do
your burn, That should do it hopefully.
I was not paying attention and clicked on the ISO/UDF and for some reason it
didn't do the job
