Will my current software (Office, Photoshop, Corel, Nero etc) function
properly when I change from Win XP (which is not the 64 bit version) to
Vista X-64? Is it sufficient to just adapt the hardware to the new
environment?

what you'll have to do is go the website of the programs you want to find out
about and find if there capable running on a 64 bit version or email them if
still no luck you just might have to do like many others do install and try
it and do alot of search hope this helps.

Some will work others not. Nero will probably be a problem depending on the
version. Unless they have signed drivers it will be a problem. Office
seems to work fine. Many of my programs either didn't work or install.

there is an Upgrade advisor available at ms vista site.
it is supposed to advise you on hardware and software problems you might encounter.

Unless they have a driver almost all programs should run in x64.

If it requires a driver, like a printer you may have more difficulty. I
would say try it and see what happens. Just don't activate right away until
you are sure.

I have made the plunge over to x64 an I am very happy.

But is not for 64-bit nor is it particularly accurate for 32-bit

Consequently my best bet will be to wait for the Vista upgrade advisor to give me a more realistic assessment of what my current software capablities are in a X 64 environment. (assuming that this will eventually be possible)
PS: I am still puzzled about the benefits and the associated extra hardware and software cost of changing to X64

Since there is such a small install base of XP X-64 I don't believe there will ever be an upgrade advisor. If you can dual boot, you may want to try the RC version if you have it. My advice is to have a second copy of the beta on the machine so you can test programs BEFORE installing it on one you are using for production. I have had to reinstall several times because the backout of a program that decided 2/3 of the way thru the install that it couldn't complete left behind damaging entries. Especially true of 64-bit with the driver signing requirement. Also, some programs will install and either not run or not run properly and you can't uninstall them.

There is no Upgrade Advisor for x64 because there is no upgrade path to x64. Vista x64 requires a clean instlalation.

am fully aware it is not for 64 bit, but at least it is a place to start.

Almost all software that runs under a 32-bit version of Windows will run
under a 64-bit version of Windows. There are some exceptions (for example,
antivirus software, other programs that either install services or drivers
or that insist on improper access to hardware) but in general the WOW64
layer (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WOW64) will handle any
down-conversion your system needs to do.

Nero 7.5.9.0 works great on x64.

Not sure about that. I only ever use Nero Burning ROM, I don't use any
of the other stuff (Nero Micro / Nero Lite).
