Vista worries

Now that stores are passing out coupons for complimentary upgrade to Vista
(if and when it comes out) when you buy a new XP computer, I've started
actively looking for a replacement for the 3-year-old one I have.

I'll need to buy a printer to go with it, as the Lexmark I use now will
stay with my present computer, which becomes a back up.

Which brands have provided new drivers when Microsoft switched the OS? I
recall wails from HP owners when ME and 2000 were introduced, but I'm more
inclined to Canon anyway. What's their record.

While I'm looking for just a computer/monitor package, I've seen those
that offer a printer or all-in-one as well. A cheap printer that takes
small, expensive carts doesn't attract me but a decent all-in-one might,
as long as it will run under Vista.

Any suggestions on buying strategy would be appreciated.

I have been running the Vista Beta for some time (currently RC2), and
was pleasantly surprised when the "Add printer" function correctly
identified and installed a driver for my HP Photosmart 2610 All-in-one
and Photosmart 8750 printers. I just checked and most current Epson
and Canon printers are included as well.

I guess the question that comes up is if the "in box" drivers are fully
functional, or a sunset of the manufacturer's drivers, and then, which
printer manufacturers will be offering full function drivers and when?

I cannot speak for the others, but the print drivers for the HP
Photosmart 2610 and 8750 were full functioned. Features included
automatic double sided printing in the 2610, ink level reporting, color
management, multiple pages per sheet (1-16), print modes from fast draft
to max DPI and extensive paper type selection (including support for
automatic detection).
