Hi!
I have a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. Everything was going
fine today until I clicked for updates to be installed and then to re-start
after the updates, as normal. However, now when I start the computer the
Windows screen says 'Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3. 0% complete' then it
shuts down and automatically restarts with the same message. This has been
going on for hours and I cannot get into Windows or do anything else. Is this
a virus? Any idea what I do? Please help as I am terrified my computer is now
dead....

You can try pressing F8 before Windows boots, and after the BIOS screen
(just keep tapping the F8 key). This should bring you to a menu that has
"Last Known Configuration". Select that, and it should boot up again. Then
try reinstalling the updates again.

"Keyser" - hi, I have a Fujitsu laptop and was having the same problem as
Shirley. Linked to your fix, at http://www.anguas.com/?p=47 and followed
their instructions by restoring to a checkpoint before the last windows
update. I was able to then restart my computer. I followed the their
suggested download link,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0d-dfbf-4527-806e-9a1634d0cc8e&DisplayLang=en
and when I downloaded it and ran it I got a message that said "The update
does not apply to your system"? where do I go from here? did I miss
something?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me on this problem, I have found some
advice which recommends I bring up the F8 menu then select system
restore from there, however there does not appear to be such an option,
any ideas?

I have previously tried starting in safe mode etc. with no success. I'm
not sure if I have the recovery discs, I seem to remember making them
but cannot be sure and have no way of finding them at present My
computer has been looping continuously for 12hrs now! Please help.

Thanks in anticipation,
Kate.

Pressing F8 while it`s booting ?

..
Pressing F8 when the system is first starting should bring up a boot menu.
From there you can select SAFE mode. You may also have "Boot to last known
good configuration" (or words to that effect). If you can get into SAFE
mode you can try system restore to go back to a point right before the
problem started. If neither option gets you to the desktop then "System
Recovery" may be your only choice. It sounds like you have an OEM install
of Windows and don't have a Microsoft OS DVD, is that correct? If you don't
have the System Recovery discs you should be able to get them sent to you by
the manufacturer. Call their support line. Keep in mind that some System
Recovery routines have a non-destruction option, which means the data is
saved. Sometimes there is only the destructive option, which means the
partition is erased and the data is lost. If you have data that you want
saved then make sure you back it up. Even if System Recovery offers to save
the data for you there is no guarantee it will work.
