I have a friend who has a laptop at home running XP Home with wireless
broadband, he also has a work laptop running Vista Business. He was looking
at a site for measuring his broadband speed (don't know which but I can find
out if its relevant) and found that when he used his work/vista laptop it
reported download speeds 3 times faster than on his xp-home laptop (896kbps
vs 2.4mbps) . Both laptops are quite new (less than 6 months old). Any idea
why there might be such a discrepancy?

I've asked him to check on the speed each laptop is reported for the
wireless network (so wonder whether one might be 11b and the other 11g, but
even so doubt that that would account for the difference.

Any ideas appreciated.

TIA.

b and g make a lot of difference. access the router and set it to use
only g and not mixed mode.
