My optical disk drive quit running reading disks. Checked Device Manager.
The ODD is still installed. Details show an error code 19 and a message
saying something is damaged or corrupted in the Registry. Probably my fault
because I dabble in there every once and a while and probably mistakenly
deleted a key or value. Of course, I do it so often that arrogance lulled me
into not making a backup copy.
While trying to correct the problem I realized I don't know exacltly how
entries in the Registry are created. When Wiindows installs a piece of
hardware, what creates the registry entries? If you have an installation
disk, does that software create the entries for that particular device or
does iWindows query the driver or firmware in this case to create the
entries. This is an OEM device and I have no driver/firmware installation
disk. The device is Plug and Play as far as Windows recognizing the device
and providing a driver, but that doesn't seem to re-write my registry
entries. I've tried disconnecting/uninstalling the drive and
reconnecting/reinstalling the drive and Windows recognizes the drive and its
driver, but I still have the same error in the registry. How do I get this
device or Vista to re-write the drive registry enteries?
