Vista / Windows 7 provides no real benefits

I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to
£2000

not including my time - It will take around 100 hours

This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does
not work on Vista

and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new
product"
even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different
OS

Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to
be worked around

All this takes time MY VALUABLE time

In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money

In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to
Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great

But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly
transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me

I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem

just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more
money out of us

If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or
Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users

or to me

I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista
GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)

My benefit is this!

Since using Windows 7 I have not had one single hang or crash.

What more can I say?

Damn you are slow. Took me about 2 hours including install and
configuration of system. This includes many third party apps.
Sounds like Windows is way over your head.
This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does
not work on Vista

Stick with XP then.

They don't expect you to do anything. If it doesn't work for you then stick
with what you have. No big deal.

So.

Sounds like your valuable time Ain't all that valuable. Sounds like you
work in a fast food establishment.

Maybe you should take some of that money you have and go back to school.
Just FYI.
In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to
Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great

Stick with them. No worries about Vista or Windows 7.
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly

You are no power user. If it takes you 100 hours to configure a new system,
your IQ must be around 50.
I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem

You also believe that the Moon is made of Green Cheese.

You don't have money. No worries.

You wouldn't understand.

Or to you?
I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista

After reading this far, I believe any Windows product is way over your head.
Talk with Alias and he will set you up with that INFERIOR Ubuntu.

That seems more like your style.

Just FYI.

Geez - I haven't had a single hang or crash in over five years!

I thought Vista was super stable and never crashed......

.......at least that's what all the zealot's and MVP's say.

I've been running Vista at home for almost 2 years. I've had a huge
reduction in problems since I went from XP to Vista (completely
different machines). I still have XP on my office computer and it's
not had too many problems but it has more then I've had on the home
machine and it does sometimes get so screwed up that I have to give up
and reboot.

There is no benefit to you as you have said. So sod off and troll
elsewhere...nobody is actually forcing you to upgrade.

Thanks Carl, that is a very interesting perspective. It is always
interesting to hear the view of a real customer. I was in large systems
software development since 1961 and know that in these circles one can
easily get disconnected from the real customers. The logics applied in
the development houses (especially when it is the biggest company in the
industry), can very easily land on cloud 9.
On the other hand, you sometimes have to decide to leave legacy behind
- else the system will mushroom forever. And then you get complains too.
It looks like in this case MS picked the wrong facility.
However, I have also learned over the years that people do not like
change all together - even at the system professional level (or for that
matter in any life situation). Maybe that is why progress is coming in
such small doses.

I have been reading and posting in a thread in the media center NG,
starting with:

Message-ID: <[email protected]>

The problem there is that someone apparently has been using some *very* old
equipment, and now is having a very difficult time saving some work that he
doesn't want to lose, because his equipment is totally obsolete. The poster
is not the person in question, but is hoping to help him, in spite of what
looks like significant odds against success.

It's not, generically, a new or unknown problem, of course. Like just try
to copy songs off of your 8-track tapes...

Anyway, in spite of the pain, in the long term it might still be safest for
Sentar to move to Vista or 7. It's his decision, and I won't presume to
argue with him about it, but I still wish to express my opinion.

I have been in the computer industry for 22 years.

As a tea lady it sounds like.
