After spending 3 hours upgrading from XP to Vista I now find that
Microsoft Office 2000 doesn't work! Also, help files are no longer
working on any program.

And where the heck did they hide the display settings.

Morons at Microsoft strike again.

Try reinstalling Office 2000. It should work with Vista with no problems.
Help files should work... Are you getting any error when you try using them?

Display settings > Right click on desktop | Personalize | Display Settings
is last on that list.

To my knowledge, Office 2003 and later is compatible in Vista. However,
OpenOffice 2.1 runs great in Vista.

Old Windows Help files that uses the .HLP format are now obsolete. See
this URL for more depreciated features:

Deprecated features

and

Windows XP feature excluded [from Vista]

Remember that each new operating system released, especially that
Microsoft releases, always comes with changes -- some welcomed and many
unwelcomed changes.

Office XP and below are not compatible with Vista. As advised during the
setup you should have run the Advisory, I know for a fact that I will tell
you, you will have problems if you ahve Office XP or below installed.

Heck, I'm running Office for Windows 95 in Vista , and it works fine. I do
get a message when I start Word to the extent of..."The Windows registration
database file is not valid. You can correct it with Words Setup program."

I close the box, and Word functions as it should (as does Excel, Power
point).

Yes, I recommend Openoffice at www.openoffice.org. great price too!

Many use Office 95 and up. I've seen Office 2000, 2003, and 2007 all work
with Vista. The others have been said to work on the newsgroups and various
forums.

OpenOffice 2.1 is the fastest running program in Vista so far. Strangely,
OpenOffice runs fater in Vista than XP SP2 and my XP SP2 laptop is much
faster.

Did you already have Office 95 installed in your existing Windows
installation before upgrading to Vista?

Couldn't get it installed. 2003 and 2007 went fine. This is the first I
heard anyone getting anything below 2003 working

No. I had a minimal clean XP install.

Makes me wonder if the morons are at MS or at the other end shelling out
money for it.

The only part of Office 2000 which might be problematic is Outlook.
I've run the other components without problems here -- though I did
that as a clean install of Office 2000.

Office 97 works fine on Vista Ultimate!

(If you have trouble with Office 97, specifically Access, delete the font
haup....ttf)
This is a "cure" listed in the Microsoft knowledge base.

Hope it helps!

Ok, I reinstalled office 2000 and everything but Outlook seems to work
OK.

Observation: Now my 3 Ghz P4 runs like a 286 under Vista. Very slow
to open programs, very slow internet access.

I think we have another Windows ME here.

another ME? You have got to be kidding! I run a 3.4ghz P4 on a
toshiba laptop and it runs vista without a problem.... plenty fast too.
I can't do aero with the Radeon mobility 9000 integrated video, but I
knew that going into it....

No, only a clueless owner.

How much memory? Vista should run reasonably well on a 3GHz P4 with
say 1G of memory and a supported video card.
