I just purchased a new HP laptop with VISTA. We were told that we would get
a free update to Windows 7 when Windows 7 gets released. We were told to go
to microsoft.com/update to register. When I tried to go to the website, I
received an error that the website did not exist. I went to Microsoft.com
main web page and could find nothing or a link that appeared to get me to the
correct place. How do I go about registering for the upgrade and then in Oct
when Windows 7 becomes available, how do I get the actual upgrade?

Contact HP and let them know that the site to register is not working.

Maybe try the HP site instead: http://www.hp.com/go/windows7upgrade
