Do you have a question?

Joseph:
The time that the upgrade ran might not be out of line depending on
programs installed. The roll-back that late in the installation is an
indication of a conflict from a program or hardware. Before performing an
upgrade from XP uninstall all AV programs, spyware programs, Nero, Sonic,
Power DVD. Early in the upgrade process there will be a screen listing
conflicting programs, drivers or hardware, stop the upgrade installation,
uninstall the conflicting items, restart the upgrade. The programs listed
are known to corrupt an upgrade installation, there are others but I didn't
have them installed or write them down at the time. Another thing that can
help for a better upgrade is to perform a disk cleanup and defragmentation
of XP before performing an upgrade. Have a great day.

One of the known causes of this behavior is an app that has locked one or
more registry keys that Setup needs to write to in order to record a
successful installation. Any app that monitors or scans the computer can
cause this. So can a piece of malware. Removal of all AV and other such
apps, including ActiveSync is essential.

I was near the end and on just about the final reboot the blue screen of
deaths hit and kept on repeating. Ended up putting XP Home back on and
nothing else at all, updated and activated XP and then did a "clean" install
from within XP and no BSOD's but it was a long bloody day. Thankfully I had
asked a lot of questions previously so I knew what to expect and I
understood "upgrade" in terms of Vista .

btw: I had backed everything I wanted onto an esata drive so lost nothing

Remove any programs like an AV, Spyware protection,
automatic disk defraggers, anything that monitors.
Empty/uncheck startup programs. Do some disk cleanup
and defrag before running the upgrade. You may also want
to unplug any USB devices and then after the upgrade, plug
them back in.

Thanks guys for your input.

Is there a log file emitted which will indicate exactly what the problem
was? I ran the advisor immediately prior to the upgrade attempt and the
Advisor gave the go-ahead. I'm loath to commit another 4 hours to this
attempt without some sort of clue as to what problem was encountered.

Thanks,
