Just received the Vista Ultimate 32 Bit and it says that My LICENSED copy of
XP PRO SR 2 32 Bit can not be upgraded, a “clean†Custom install only is
the only install availableavailable, As I am running about 25 Gig if
executables, at this point am not ready to have to re-install everything.
any MS people with any ideas besides an Fdisk

Sounds like you acquired an OEM version of Windows Vista.
OEM versions cannot upgrade over an existing Windows XP
operating system.

Welllllllllll Microsoft sent it to me along with a 64 bit for the Beta
testing of Vista. and now what am I supposed to do with the program. I feel
kind of left out in the cold.

Microsoft sent you Beta versions?

Let's see if we all understand your situation.
You are still using a pre-final release of Vista Ultimate. Understand that
after June 1st, that won't work, and now that the final version is out in
stores, MS won't support it at all. I am awaiting my promised final version
of Vista, so I too am running RC.

Now for the upgrade, are you trying to upgrade by booting from the Vista
media, or are you running the upgrade using the Setup.exe within XP SP2? You
can only run an upgrade from within an existing valid OS, not from the media.

If you are launching Vista install from XP, what results do you get with the
upgrade advisor?

I am using the full RTM version.. Henry may not be though.. :)

I assumed that he meant that MS sent him RTM versions of Ultimate as a
gratuity for participating in the beta-testing program.
Is that correct, Henry?

If you have the Vista pre released dvds, and it sounds like you do, it is
fairly simple. If you boot from the dvd your only option is a fresh setup.
But, if you start your XP and then open the dvd, you have the option of a
fresh install, or an upgrade. It will not offer the upgrade when booted
from the DVD. You may prefer to make a partition and have it as a dual
boot. Not sure you want to depend on Vista as there are still programs that
are not yet compatable. Hope this helps.
