Vista Ultimate performance

Running Ultimate on Dell Prec490, duoprocessors, dualcores, 4 Gb ram, 2
drives. Only Office and a few other applications loaded to date, Live One
Care protection. Computer has transitory but frequent hangups that last 30
sec to 3 min or more. Nothing to do but wait while the "busy" circle gyrates.
Often happens when opening a folder or clicking a command, but not ever
predictable or repeatable.

Frustrating on ony computer, but not acceptable on a high end machine like
this. Dell TS has tried but been of little help. Am I the only one with this
experience?

Was this a factory Vista install, an upgrade Vista install, or a "clean" Vista
install?

Return the computer as faulty, insisting on a refund. See if that helps dell
tech support learn how to fix problems they created.

I would insist that Dell solve the problem or I would return it.

When did this problem start? Right out of the box? Could it be caused by one
of the programs you have installed? Have you tried a System Restore? Have you
tried a factory default restore?
 
If you've unpacked it, Dell won't take it back nor will they will return your
money. What manufacturer will?
 
Dell WILL (from personal experience) replace it, or send a technician.

If you have the restore disks (or use the restore partition, if available) and
restore to the default factory setup and the problem persists, they will
definitely help you to resolve your problems.
 
You should contact Dell customer support on this issue. They will replace the
computer or send a technician to your home to solve the issue, usually the
next business day. I have purchased four computers from Dell in the past
three years and Dell has always provided excellent replacement and/or service.

Dell will repair or replace it. We get them replaced / repaired all the time
at work and people I know who have purchased a home PC from Dell have also
had them replaced when faults aren't their fault. That said, the law on
returns may be different where you are.

Just do as Cal Bear '66 says and do a restore and see if the fault persists.
If it does then call Dell.

The original poster would not agree with you. They've already been down that
route with little joy it appears: "Dell TS has tried but been of little
help."

They've sold you something that does not work. You were not able to
determine that it doesn't work properly until you unpacked and tested it. I
don't really see that as being a problem.
 
Update!!!

I finally found the Event logger. It recorded repeated errors in the iaStor
device, an ide element for drive(0). The device repeatedly goes beyond
timeout, two instances recorded at 69 and 70 seconds respectively.

Reported same to Dell, and got email back suggesting that I uninstall Live
One Care (So help me God). I think I need a different tech.

Lesson learned: don't blame everything on Vista just because it's new and
just because it's Windows (which I had been doing).

Thanks for the advice above; it was right on target.

Update of the Update!!

The iaStor "device" is in fact a driver, which needed to be updated.
Software, not hardware.

In any case, the machine is working far better than it did before.
