Vista to XP printer sharing

All right. So I've crawled all over this forum in search of an answer to this
problem, and I have yet to find anything quite like it.

I am running Vista on a brand new computer. It is connected to an HP
Lazerjet 2600n. It is also connected to an XP computer via a router. Now when
there was an older (XP) computer in the place of the vista one, the XP
computer was able to print to the lazerjet quite easily.

That's changed. The Vista machine can print just fine to the lazerjet. The
XP machine can't get a single document through. Now here's the strange part:

1. While the back computer can't print to the lazerjet, the job still shows
up in the cue on BOTH the XP and the Vista machine.

2. I have full connectivity between both machines; they talk to each other
just fine, and I have the permissions so low on the Vista machine at this
point that the XP machine can browse the entire hard drive.

3. (the really weird part) In most programs, any attempt to print on the XP
machine--which had not undergone any software changes whatsoever--will cause
the program to crash. This is true of quickbooks and msoffice97; photoshop
CS2 simply tells us that there was a program error and keeps on going.

The last problem leads me to think that the flaw may be with the XP machine.
Suspecting a driver conflict, I dug around on these forums until I found a
procedure to put the XP printer driver on the back machine. Unfortunately, it
didn't seem to fix anything. I have since updated and rebooted the entire
mess--printer, XP and Vista box--but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

Hi Dvana. You've probably done this, but just to make sure: Is printer
sharing on in the Vista Network and Sharing Center?

Thanks,
Gloria

Printer sharing is on and password-protected sharing is off--the XP computer
can see the HP printer just fine. I thought maybe Vista prompting the XP
computer for a password was causing the XP programs to crash, but even with
it off the results are the same.

I had it suggested to me that the problem may be that the print trays aren't
synching properly...

Hello Dvana,

I know this isn't what you want to be posted, but maybe the good karma will
get you the answer to your dilemma... I ned YOUR help!

I recently purchased a vista computer. I am having difficulty getting it to
open a network with an XP computer. I also can't get the Vista PC to print on
the network copier.... how did you get the two PCs connected?

Any info is greatly appreciated/

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much help I can be. I know there are some
tutorials wandering around here that should be of some help. We basically
plugged the new computer in where the old one was and gave it the same IP
address and computer name as the old one, and I was only there for half of
it. -_-;; Mostly the whole printer struggle has been my task. Poke around and
you should be able to find a link to one of those tutorials, which will be
*far* more helpful than I. Good luck!
