Someone please explain this, as I keep hearing about how Vista is "new from
the ground up".

- Go to C:\Windows\Fonts
- right-click anywhere in the right pane and select "Add New Font"

Am I blind or isn't that dialog that pops open straight out of Windows for
WorkGroups 3.11?

"more of the same" is more like it...

That was actually a huge issue with a lot of us beta testers.

We weren't too happy about that.

Needless to say it is one of the only remaining items from that era.

If it works and meets all of the requirements why not keep it in use?

Why spend time and money reinventing the wheel?

The way it was explained was that there are certain functions that while
they seem immaterial or marginal require huge amounts of re-coding to
change. Software doesn't function as simple sub-routines. Everything is
dependant on other things. So to change that dialog might be 7 lines of
code, but it might cause 2,000 other things to break and then you'd have
to rewrite maybe thousands of lines of code. Every single change can
introduce unexpected results. Unfortunately, users only see the Shell &
not all the underlying work that is done.

This has already been posted. You are not the one to find it.He didn't say he was the 'only one'....

That is REALLY bizarre. I almost never install fonts so I've not
noticed.*

I wonder if I can turn up progman.exe, cardfile.exe and winfile.exe in
a search of my Windows folder? ;-)

*OK, I've installed a number of fonts, but only because they came with
other programs and said programs do the installation at setup.

So what? If it does the job, why does it need changing?

It was a big deal for some people a few months back. People always need
something to complain about. I could really care less about the add font
dialog :)

I think it is pretty funny how people are so hypocritical. Microsoft can
make pretty things, but people will call it eye candy. Microsoft can leave
well enough alone, and people wonder where the eye candy is!

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright
until you hear them speak.........

Many things in Windows have been reused from previous versions, mainly
because they just work. This is actually a GOOD thing.

Why fix minor things that aren't broken? I'd rather they concentrate on the
major things that are.

Here's an explanation for you - Vista still has a bunch of apps that
haven't changed in years:

Vista has good stuff which pre-dates WFWG. I can still run my favourite
word processor - Edlin

Windows Start button, Start Search type 'Edlin' and join the select club.
