So when I first bought my Gateway laptop it came with Vista premium, and sure
it looked all nice and shinny, but once I tried to install my games and play
them I got punched in the face by Microsoft. I got horrible frame rate with
ALL my video games. Of course I researched if my games were compatible with
Vista, and even came to these forums with my cries for help, but no-one
seemed to be able to help at all.

I know its Vista that makes my games run like crap cause just a month ago I
installed XP on my top and got perfect frame rate with all my games. The only
reason I went back to Vista is because I couldn't find all the proper drivers
for my laptop with XP since its built and only supports Vista. It makes me
cry a little inside cause my girlfriend has a Gateway laptop with worse
system specs, yet she gets alot higher frame rate cause she uses XP, QQ.

So now comes to my topic; After all the research I did and tricks I tried to
improve performance I heard, this was months ago btw, that there wa a service
pack coming to Vista that would improve performance. So after hearing that
and getting all hyped up I waited and waited... So now we come to today. I
just installed SP1 and was kinda excited! Yay finally my games will run
smoothly!...Nope the still run with crappy frame rate.

Before anyone replies with anything like "Well what is your system specs?"
as if this is the problem my games run bad, remember that I did state that
with XP they ran perfect AND my computer is twice as good as my GFs but hers
runs twice as good as me, QQ. And also remember that I did state that I've
tried almost every trick in the book such as disable Win Defender, get latest
drivers (ALL are up to date), Instal DirectX, lower visual effects, etc...

After all the research I've done I saw that alot of peolpe with very nice
computers that should run games full settings no sweat just lag up like hell
with Vista, so they switched to XP. Too bad for me I can't do that cause my
top only uses Vista. Its also kinda sad that in order to get an upgrade I
have to downgrade to a lesser OS...

So whats up Microsoft?? You guys gonna fix any of this soon?

Nice rant, but you're not talking to MS here, just other users like
yourself.
If you list your system specs, and which games you're running, perhaps
someone can offer some help.

What Dave said...

You bought a Laptop, probably a cheap one (< $1000 on the sticker), and
now you want to play games at 30fps.

GOOD LUCK BUDDY!

You should be pissed at one of two people, either GATEWAY, for selling
you a laptop thinking you could get desktop performace out of a sub-
$1000 notebook, or the SALES GUY you bought the system from, assuming
you said to him, "I want to play high end games on this computer, will I
get decent FPS?", and if the Sales Guy then said, "Hell yeah, you'll own
anyone on a desktop with this computer." then you should get a refund
for false advertising.

Gateway has Gaming notebooks, and they get decent performance, but they
still won't win any rewards for performance.

There are smaller companies that'll build you a custom notebook for
gaming. MSI, ASUS, and a couple other motherboard makers make notebooks
designed for gaming, and they are cheap to boot.

A friend of mine owns a 2 year old MSI notebook that runs Half Life 2 at
full settings/resolution at 40+fps.

My Toshiba with a Radeon x1200 gets OK performance out of Half-Life 2,
and Lord of the Rings Online runs good in Low settings, but it's exactly
what I expected out of this hardware. Mainstream notebooks just are not
designed for games.

Running XP didn't result in much better performance, however Linux
(Ubuntu) runs Quake 4 like a dream, but that's Linux, they have special
hamsters coding their s*it.

Sure I could list system specs and you guys can tell me the pros and cons of
my computer and what you "think" is the problem, but re-read my post...If you
read it you would see that with XP my computer ran the games I play perfectly
fine with great frame rate. AND my girlfriends computer, which is a lower
model and mine is twice as good as hers, runs the SAME games better than me
when I use Vista.

But to make you all happy here is my specs:
Processor:
AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology TL-56 / 1.8 GHz Duel Core
Cache Memory Type: L2 cache
Cache size: 1 MB
RAM:
Installed Size 2 GB Technology DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz
RAM configuration features: 2 x 1 GB
Video:
Graphics Processor / Vendor NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100 TurboCache supporting
256MB

So there are my specs. My girlfriends laptop is about the same except she
only has 1 gig of memory and does not have duel core technology. Yes my video
card sucks real bad, but if I had XP installed and my games worked perfectly
fine, why don't they work good with Vista? And how come my girlfriend's
laptop runs the same gams perfectly fine, but her laptop is worse than mine?
Its been like this the first day I bought this laptop.

I've tried everything from tweaking Vista down a bit, to reformatting, to
making sure my games are compatible. I've done it all just about. My games
are compatible btw.

The games I play is this: Counter Strike 1.6, Counter Strike: Source,
Half-Life 2, Cabal Online. Some of these games are graphic intensive, and I
know my graphics card sucks, but then why do they work fine with XP??

Cos Vista is a totally diffo kettle of fish, it's as simple as that. Vista
uses more resources, gaming on a laptop with Vista is a waste of time, get a
proper gaming machine, that way you can play all your games, I know it's not
what you wanted to hear but hey that's life

I dunno, sounds like you know what you're doing. Run Hardware diagnostics
on your hardware?

I ran CS:S and 1.6 for a while on my notebook, ran good. (My system is a
Toshiba A215-S4767)

I won't deny Vista runs like crap sometimes, but for the most part my in-
game performance is spot on with my XP equivalant, but XP certainly has
been around longer and a bit more polished in the Explorer Performance
area.

Re-reading what you posted originally I'd still wager it's your notebook
hardware. No idea really without some hands on.

Computer is still under warranty if it's under a year old, did you try
contacting Gateway? If you bought the computer at a brick and mortar, take
it in and tell them you think there's something wrong with the hardware.
Best Buy will check it out at the store if you're under their extended
warrantly, otherwise they can send it to Gateway/BBY Service if you have
proof of purchase. You sometimes have to yell a bit, but if it's under
warranty BBY can send out Gateway notebooks.

yeah, early Vista computers implemented a bunch of hardware that has no XP
drivers. A lot of companies have started making XP drivers due to demand. I
don't know what model gateway you have, but you might try poking around for
XP drivers again.

Good luck bud, I would suggest running Ubuntu, but I don't think Steam has
a Linux version save for servers, and what Dave said... This is just
Microsoft's Newsgroup server, not many higher ups at Microsoft reading
here.

Have you ever tried getting any Windows games running under Linux? I have
and it is not for the faint of heart. I installed Neverwinter Nights to
Ubuntu and it is a ten step process that is a PITA.

People who install Linux do NOT do it to run games, at least not the games
that are only designed to run in Windows. It's a PITA because Linux isn't
compatible with Windows Games.

Notice I did not suggest he run Linux, I said "I would suggest running
Ubuntu, BUT I don't think Steam has a Linux version, save for servers,"

So yeah, I've never gotten a game to run under Linux, because I've never
tried, what a waste of effort.

Um, my laptop cost like $2200 and it's a 5 years old model with GF Go 6800
card in it.
Now, I'm on Vista running games max setting get round up to 30-40FPS.

Having a higher MODEL number DOENS'T MEAN is BETTER. She probably have a
Higher End Graphic Card than Yours.

Your girlfriend one probably has a Dedicated card not a ON-BOARD videocard.

ON-Board video sucks bad ass at anything really.

You are FOS. There have been numerous web mags that have done tests on
Vista vs XP game performance and now they are pretty close to each
other. If you are getting bad performance on Vista then it is probably
because you have shitware loading in the background. You need to exit
all unnecessary processed when playing games. That means shutting down
Defender, Anti Virus, the side panel etc. You can even create a .bat
file that will do all of this for you when you want to play games and
they will start up again when you reboot the PC.

Here is one that I got with a game that I use on XP. It will work in
Vista too but some services won't stop on Vista that do on XP. You can
add/remove items to this list so that it is tailored to your PC. Just
copy the text below into a txt file then rename the file with a .bat
extension. When you want to play demanding games just run this .bat
file first. Put REM in front of any line you don't to be stopped.

People who install Linux do NOT do it to run games,

Then why are you suggesting to someone in a gaming forum he should run
Ubuntu? I've ran various versions of Linux for about 8 years now
(finally came to the conclusion that it does nothing I need that I
can't do with Windows so finally dumped it altogether) and they all
stink for gaming. If I ran Linux exclusively I would lose a lot of
functionality of my computer because a lot of stuff I have just
doesn't work on Linux.

Geezus, go back and READ my original post, please.

I'm not going to bother re-quoting myself, AGAIN.

Well said Ki,

I had a guy bring in a 3 year old MSI lappy running Vista with 2gigs DDR
ram and he could run Half-Life 2 at full detail around 30fps.

A lot of those laptops you get at Best Buy with exception of a few gaming
notebooks and the Dell XPS level systems, just bite. Only way to move
notebooks is to sell them on the cheap. Customers will drive an extra 50
miles to save $20. Cheapest system i'd ever buy would be a low end white
macbook. $1099, everything cheaper is worthless.
