Vista SP1 Causes Continuous Network Reconnects

SP1 causes a cycle of connects and disconnects on my wired network
connection. Problem disappears when I uninstall SP1 but reappears when I
reapply SP1. My connection is through an Intel Pro/1000 CT chipset on an
ASUS P4C800-E motherboard going to a Netgear WGR614 v7 router. Problem
remains even if I uninstall my Avast antivirus software. Just using Vista's
native firewall. The network icon in the system tray cycles through a yellow
warning sign going on and off.

I've tried the repair connection option in Vista but it doesn't find any
problem. I uninstalled the driver for the card hoping a reinstall would
rebuild and fix the problem but it made no difference. I'm using Microsoft's
drivers for the NIC chipset. I power cycled the router but that made no
difference. But as I said, uninstalling sp1 restores a normal network
connection.

An ipconfig when the connection is good shows an IP in proper range for the
DHCP from my router. At the disconnect, yellow warning sign, it shows no IP.

I've attached entries from the system log that illustrates what happens in a
reconnect cycle. I deleted the XML event data for brevity but can add it to
this thread if it's necessary.

Thanks

do you have the latest firmware for the Netgear router?
have you unbound IPv6 from the NIC?
is power management for the NIC turned off in device manager so that
it is always on?

I had the latest firmware and I had already turned off the power mgmt on the
network chipset. But you hit the mark in the having IPv6 unbound. I've
done a couple enable / disable cycles on IPv6 and the problem consistently
occurs when IPv6 is bound and goes away when it's unbound.

Thank you for your prompt response on a weekend no less with a remedy that
really worked.

I am having the same issues with constant disconnects.
How does one unbound IPv6 from the NIC?

Thanks

DJ

Thanks Barb,
I tried that unbinding but still having the same issues with contant network
disconnects
using my Realtek 8139 NIC on my Acer laptop. I click a site, it works, then
next click nothing,
then it works...etc...
This all began with Via SP1 installation and does
not occur when using my wireless network, only my wired one.

do you have the latest driver for the NIC?

Yes, thanks I tried that as well as falling back to an older driver, no
change. Guess I am left with the only thing to do , uninstall SP1, which I
would not prefer because it did speed up my system substantially.

"twebdonny"
You would help us all out if you would try to plow through this and find out
why it's not working. Dropping back means you still have the problem to
solve in the future and new updates may require SP1 to be installed.

I got the very same problem:
My intel Intel PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter on a Dell Vostro 400 as well
as the Intel PRO/1000 MT Client(Workstation) Adapter on another Dell
Vostro 400 PC show exactly the same problem _after_ the installation
of Service Pack1 on Vista.
Windows's doesn't see any disconnects or something like that but when
having a look at the link and activity leds on the nic I can see that
both lights turn dark for about two seconds and then they're being
reactivated.
While this is happening I can not reach any hosts on the network and a
ping is showing lost packets.

Before the installation of sp1 the lights were constantly lit and
there were no problems with network connectivity at all.

What's funny is that there was a driver update that came from windows
autoupdate but it didn't help. I've tried the latest driver from
Intel.com now (version 8.3.9.0 from 08.01.2008) but this didn't help
either.

Please... any ideas how to get this fixed?

Thanks!

can you go into device manager and see what is available for driver
rollback for this NIC?

I am having this same problem on a Thinkpad T42P with an Intel Pro/1000 MT
Mobile Connection NIC. The problem started with SP1. It doesn't go away
when I unbind IPV6.

Has anyone solved this yet?

I had tried setting to 100 mb full duplex but it didn't fix the problem.
Only this driver from the Intel website worked.

Unbinding IPv6 from the NIC is a hack. I use IPv6 frequently and this is not
a solution for me. I have had to go back ot a 100Mb/sec card for IPv6 and for
some applications this is unacceptable.

This needs to be FIXED!

it is a driver issue. there may be a newer driver on Intel's support
site.
