I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. According to Windows Update the computer is
up to date yet I have not installed SP1. Do I wait to be offered SP1 via
windows update or install the stand alone package.

I had a similar problem on my desktop and installed SP1 and got a BSOD and
had to reinstall my backup image. I feel a little reluctant to go through all
that again.

I look forward to your comments

SP1 was offered on my dad's Compaq desktop, but each time he tried, (3) it
failed. Don't know why, it just did. Then he went to the Microsoft page, and
downloaded the stand-a-lone SP1 and viola...it installed no problem, and so
far, he has reported no problems. So then *I* went and downloaded the
stand-a-lone on my Gateway Laptop...(Vista Premium), because it hadn't been
offered in Windows Update. It also installed with no problems. I have
broadband, and the installation total was about 3 hours...and my dad's was
about the same length of time.

If you've not been offered it by WU, then have a look here:

As a general rule, if SP1 isn't offered to you via Windows Update, then it's
detected a piece of hardware it's not going to like. Judging by the fact
that your system crashed badly when you installed it, it is safe to assume
this.

Well if you look at my previous post, you'll see that wasn't the case. I
still don't know why, but an MPV on here advises the *stand-a-lone*, and it
sure worked for me and my dad.
