When vista goes into sleep mode is the hard drive still "on" and spinning?
If so it would appear that sleep mode would shorten hard drive life since it
would put more wear on the drive.

Hi Bruce,

It may be a background service such as indexing or defragging is running and
not permitting a full sleep mode. It may also be that the BIOS is set to a
higher S mode, say S2, and needs to be changed to S3 or S4 to allow for a
full hibernate-type sleep.

Very interesting Jim.

I wish they could have separated failures into electronics failures vs. disk
media failures. My guess is that failed drives with low SMART errors failed
because of an electronic failure which tends to be instantaneous rather than
generate errors first. Given that assumption, one could probably deduce the
percentage of electronics failures. It is disappointing that the author of
the article never considered such an analysis since data recovery becomes
much easier when the failure is due to the electronics.
