Ok, I copied and pasted everything from your last reply in the previous
reply/thread. Let me know if it sufficient?

Just be sure to back up your data files first.

** Sigh ** Maybe it's time to use the recovery DVD and restore the system
back to factory
Fred.
you could always re install it if it does not resolve the issue. I
don't use AVG so I don't know - but most of these install an LSP
that could impact networking. I use NOD32 myself.

Thanks Barb,
I have AVG Anti-virus Free Edition. I could try uninstalling it and see
if
it makes a difference. Are you sure anti-virus software could be
responsible? Internet Security Software with a firewall, etc. maybe.
Fred
One other thing (can't remember if this was discussed) - do you have
Norton or something similar installed? Canyou temporarily uninstall
if you do?
and finally, if there is still a driver issue, the patch won't help.
so if you have tried several versions of the appropriate Nvidia
driver, then you should see what MS has to say.
On Thu, 18 Oct 2007 18:24:53 -0400, "Frederick Smith"
Thanks Barb,
But, the patch is not making any difference. I even tried
uninstalling
it,
rebooting, and reinstalling, rebooting, and have the same problem?
Isn't
this patch supposed to fix the problem I am having?? I need to
understand
what you mean before I spend some $$ and call MS.
Fred
that is indeed the reason.
I would try rolling back the Nvidia driver as well. If you feel you
want to spend the $$ on official support, it is your option.
On Thu, 18 Oct 2007 14:13:26 -0400, "Frederick Smith"
You are right. It was installed on 10/12. I must have missed it.
That's
why
I get the message, "The update does not apply to your system". It's
because
it was already installed?
Fred
before you do that, I'd like to go back to the statement you made
that
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933872 would
not
install on 32 bit Vista. there are two downloads on that KB, the
first one is for 32 bit Vista. EXACTLY what error message do you
get?
Can you check in Control Panel, Programs and see if it is already
installed?
On Thu, 18 Oct 2007 13:18:54 -0400, "Frederick Smith"
Thanks Barb,
I disabled wireless, unchecked IPv6 from Local Area Connection
Properties,
and rebooted. No change.
Fred
PS If I shelled out the $59 or whatever the cost for a
per-incident
telephone call to MS do you think they might be able to help? I'm
getting
discouraged here.
Can you
1: disable the wireless adapter in device manager for now
2: unbind IPv6 from the wired connection
reboot
any better?

Thanks Barb,
Keep in mind that when the laptop exits sleep mode it is
connected
to
the
internet and then disconnects after about a minute or so.

can you post the text output of
ipconfig /all from an elevated cmd prompt when the computer
is
in
the "bad" state?

Thanks Barb,
I performed steps 1-7 under RESOLUTION and rebooted. No
change.
However,
I
forgot to report one behaviour. After sleep or hibernation
mode,
[sometimes]Vista appears to be connected [router and
internet],
browsing
works, etc. BUT, the connection is lost after a minute or so.
Very
strange
as this is not the case after sleep or hibernation. Does this
clarify
anything for you?
Again, I only performed steps 1-7, not those following under
the
MORE
INFORMATION section. I am going to call NetGear and point out
this
article
to them and see if they can help. In the meantime, do you
have
anything
else
to add?
Fred
Hmmn, take a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233/en-us
if
you
haven't already.

The laptop is an HP dv6406nr. I added 2 gigs of memory,
otherwise
hardware
is as listed. Vista pre-installed. I use static IP

until
I
can
resolve the problem. This will explain the ipconfig /all

Which exact laptop do you have? Did it come with Vista
pre-installed
or was this an upgrade?
Can you please post the text output of
ipconfig /all
run from an elevated cmd prompt?

The KB article did not solve the problem. I have the
latest
driver
for
my
Nvidia Gforce networking card. I have installed all
windows
updates.
I
leave
the router and modem on 24/7.
