Vista shows printer online when printer is shut off

I have Vista Business on a laptop.
When I work at home I set my home printer as the default printer.
When I am at work I set my work computer as the default.
My home printer is an HP Color Laserjet 2600N.
When I take my laptop to work it still shows the HP Color Laserjet 2600N
as being ready.
I have the HP Color Laserjet 3800 installed at work.
It doesn't matter whether I am work or at home both printers show ready all the time.

Please help.
