I'm a Vista and IE user, not a Developer.
Sequence of events:
last week... downloaded Vista Service Pack 1
this week... IE8 has stopped working... screen goes white... DEP
problem (blocks code execution) or DEP/NX No-Execute Memory
Protection.
(DEP problems can occasionally occur with DEP-compliant core operating
system components such as Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer and
Windows Installer as they support in-process third party extensions or
plugins that may not be DEP-compliant.)
Went through Windows-based programs, add-ons, and software... no
problems.
IE says add ons are turned off, however Tools, Add ons say they're
enabled :/
this week... IE8 won't run... Problem Event Name: BEX, App Name:
iexplore.exe.
IE is part of OS so I can't uninstall it. Tried over-installing IE8
but they said I have a newer version running... not true; also said
IE8 was "not compatible with my Vista 32"! Tried all downloads.
Tried to download earlier versions... no go.
Not only does "Internet Explorer" crash, but "Windows Explorer" the OS
crashes... everything on the Desktop disappears.
Mozilla Firefox... can't get in, cursor goes around in circles, have
to Restart.
My Seagate Replica External Drive has disconnected itself.
Windows Defender and Avira Antivirus show no problems.
Internet Options, Security Tab, the 4 zones are 'default' as required.
I've been all over the net and there seems to be no resolutions to
these problems. Thing is, that some programs only want to open in IE.
(Firefox is now my default browser, and Safari is now my 2nd backup.)
I am no longer using Internet Explorer (IE8); I have no choice.
Thanks for listening.

I'm the author of the above comment.
In addition, not Windows Internet Explorer (8), but WINDOWS EXPLORER
is crashing everything including the Operating System... this after
downloading Service Pack 1 for Vista32.
The programs try to run, the Windows Explorer say "not responding"...
If I search for a solution, there is none, and no information to solve
the problem.
Does anyone know where I can address Microsoft about this problem? I
think I'm about to lose everything; it even crashed my External Drive
backup. Thanks, Diane

Diane,
If you're sure it's the Service Pack 1 and not something else, go to Windows
Update, on the left side click on installed updates. Fine Service Pack 1,
highlight and uninstall. OR, you could do a system restore - choose a date
prior to the download of the SP1. Good luck. Hope this helps.

You probably need professional help, or at least a local techie
friend. The first thing to do is remove your hands from the
computer and think. Unless you have removable media backup copies
of important files, you do not troubleshoot. If you do not have
safe backup copies, making one or two should be your only concern.
Making copies of important data is the first thing you think about
when something goes wrong. You do nothing else until you have
them. Troubleshooting is an easy way to get into worse trouble.

How seriously you approach the problem should correspond to how
important your data is. That is entirely up to you, it is your
judgment.

Install SP2 ?

Why are you just now installing SP1? Vista is at SP2 for over a year. Back
up your data before proceeding, because YOU have probably severely
compromised the OS.

Clean boot the machine and unisstall SP1. Reboot in clean state and
uninstall IE8. Clean boot again and install SP1, reboot and install SP2.
Reboot and install all updates to the OS and see how it runs under IE7. If
you have trouble installing the Service Packs, YOU probably have plenty of
malware to deal with first that YOU don't even know about. Download
Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware and run complete scans.

Once you have the machine cleaned up and it runs as it should under IE7 with
both SP1 and SP2 installed; THEN try IE8. Again, install from clean boot:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Funny, SP2 and IE8 installed and work perfectly on my Vista media center;
obviously since Vista is "broken" as everybody claims, I must have done
something horribly wrong with my machine that allows it to run so well.

SP1 totally hosed my PC. I had to restore it to factory condition.

Did you try installing SP1 after restoring to factory condition and under a
clean boot state?

I did not try installing again. I don't plan to either. My PC is working
fine without it.

MS has rated SP1 "important". They also rated IE8 "important". I don't
plan to install that either.

My thinking is "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Well, all you know then is that you had trouble installing SP1 on a "dirty"
machine; you didn't even try it on a "clean" one. Support for Vista without
service packs has already ended and you won't be getting any more updates:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...sp2-windows-vista-without-service-packs?os=xp

I'd hate to have to call Microsoft when YOUR machine craps out again.
Without the latest security updates, I'm sure it's already a mess and I
wouldn't bother attempting to install SP1 either. Better to stick your head
in the sand and deny than it is to patch and upgrade.

By the way, you still haven't offered any advice to me about what I did
wrong with my machine that caused Sp2 and IE8 to work so well. I guess I
still need to get that fixed. ;-}

hi Mark,
Re why did I download SP1 when SP2 has been out awhile.
On the system tray, Windows kept saying "update". I kept ignoring it.
Last week I finally said ok and downloaded the SP1.
Then stared having problems. I didn't know about SP2 but figured it
might make things worse on top of SP1 so I didn't install it.

I Uninstalled SP1.
Ran PC Med Kit, no problems.
Ran PC Med Kit after uninstalling SP1:
Problems: 5 app paths: 1 file extension; 11 Uninstall Entries; 50 COM
and ActiveX Controls, fixed.
Windows Defender, no problems.
Avira antivirus, no problems.
Ran Malwarebytes, 2 items, removed.
Problems no longer showing up:
"DEP/NX APIs No-Execute Memory Protection crash."
(some applications & plug-ins were not DEP compliant even though IE8
is compliant.)
"BEX, App Crash; App Name: iexplore.exe"
"AppHangB1, explorer.exe"
"SyncServer.exe delayed write failed, some data may be lost; write
protected files"

Didn't uninstall IE8 as it's working fine again with no blank screen
or popups, but thanks for instruction, will still keep it in mind.
Programs and Files from my Start Button can be accessed again,
although Word files are difficult... white screen; files take forever
to come up. itunes, Windows Explorer OS, everything seem to be
working again.
My Seagate Replica external hard drive, which backed up my entire
system, is still crashed... but will take it up with Seagate.

:)

Yes you're right about backing up. For my backup, I have a Seagate
Replica EHD which backs up Apps and files, and the entire operating
system. It worked fine for the past 3 months. Since I download SP1,
it crashed. I'm working with Seagate to get it working again of give
me a new one. $180 is alot to pay for only 3 months work!
Right now I'm working on learning about the scope of Windows Backup
and Restore. I know that D: drive where things are backed up is a
partition of C: drive. I don't know about burning a boot disk, or
backing up files&folders onto to a CD but I'll learn. My Replica
comes with a Recovery CD but I admit I'm still not clear on how or why
to use it... on my ToDoList!
Complete Windows backup Restore and Repair including the OS is for the
Vista Business, Ultimate, an Enterprise editions. I have Home Premium
and it backs up files and folders only, hence my purchase of Replica
EHD.
I'll remember this part as you say, "Unless you have removable media
backup copies of important files, you do not troubleshoot."
(I had to uninstall Vista SP1 and everything seems to be working now
yay, time to back up my files and folders right now internally and
Removable while waiting for my Replica fix.)
Thanks.

Hi Carole,
I Uninstalled SP1. I'm surprised it uninstalled without kicking and
screaming, but it did.
I didn't do a system restore (& choose date prior to SP1) because
uninstalling SP1 seems to have done the trick. No error messages
coming up.
There was a newer update that downloaded itself after SP1 called:
"Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 SP Security Update for Vista SP1",
but couldn't uninstall it... maybe it uninstalled after SP1 did.
Have seen no new Windows updates for SP1 or SP2!
Windows Operating System coming up and working again :)
My kid keeps saying "get Windows 7" it works perfectly!! oh boy, I
don't think so :/ that's what they said about Vista!
My Seagate Replica external hard drive, which backed up my entire
system, is still crashed... will take it up on Seagate Forums.
Meanwhile will backup files and folder in Windows Backup and Restore
and on a Removable media.
Thanks.

I know that D: drive where things are backed up is a
partition of C: drive.

Uh oh.

If the *drive* dies you lose your backup as well as your C: partition...

Get an external USB drive and backup now, or as soon as your system is
behaving OK.
