Hi,

We need to set up a Windows server. I assume we will run Vista. It
is possible to set up a backup server with real time failover like you
can with Unix??

If yes, how is it done?

Thank you!

John

Hi,

If you need to set up a server, you wouldn't be doing it with Vista. Vista
is a client OS. You'd need Windows Server '08.

Yeah, you can do this easily with Acronis True Image Server or Enterprise,
but they cost a lot. I do not think they run the Backup Server and Group
Server services on Vista client OS though, so you need Win2003 or Win2008.
If they do install on Vista, there is no need to buy a server OS to make a
backup server if you do not have that many machines (under 10 IIRC).

This is not a safe, or really valid assumption, since Vista isn't a Server
OS and you *will* run into connection limits that cause you hard stops.

Not with Vista in a practical way.

You need to get a real server OS if you are asking this kind of question.

If you want that much automation and failsafe, you have more systems than
could be connected to a Vista system.

Get a real Server OS that's intended for this purpose, and have someone
familiar with the OS set it up for you.

You could very likely do this with a Linux server. You'll avoid the
licensing costs, but you will probably pay in setup and maintenance fees
instead.

I appreciate everyone's comments. It sounds like I'll have to get
this server OS - Windows 2008? Then, the clients can run whatever OS
(Vista probably or XP).

As far as failover, we're still not 100% that is the direction we
want, but at least I know it is possible, though expensive.

Thanks all for your views.

John.
