Vista - *Read Only* Services

There are several services in Vista that cannot be disabled, stopped, etc.
GPSVC is an example.

Why is that the case? GPSVC is a good example of a service that is
unnecessary, if you're not in a managed environment.

Regarding the “advisability“of disabling it, it serves me no purpose that
alone is reason enough to disable it. I suppose MS may has some non-Group
Policy functionality built into the service but considering the Audio takes
up what; 2 services now. I would find that pretty sad and dubious as well.

Please, help me fight the bloat. :P

Well, not quite since you can manage standalone computers with group
policy too and GPSVC is responsible for application of policies
regardless if it is domain policies or local ones. But I can see your
point.

Well, I'd say it is either one of so called "protected services" or is
configured with restrictive access list. In latter case you can try to
change service ACL with sc.exe command line utility to give your account
rights to modify service state/config.

On second thought, probably you will have hard time using sc.exe because
of cryptic ACL syntax it uses (it's called SDDL).

The easier way is to simply go ahead and delete Security key under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\gpsvc\ and reboot
computer. This will reset GPSVC service security to default for servics
which allows Administrators full aceess to service state/config. After
reboot you should be able to stop/disable GPSVC service.

Now, having said that, I'd recommend against turning off any service
UNLESS you have evidences that it uses a lot of resources. I guess
Performance Monitor can help you with tracking.

Use above on your own risk, obviously backups/restore points are
mandatory.
