new HD.. format Clean install of RC2
Then do an update to RTM .. is this supported by Microsoft..

It is not recommended. Best shot is going to be to clean install.

I sincerely doubt that a release candidate (which is free and contains a
time bomb) is in the upgrade path. You need a legal "qualifying" operating
system, either presently on your computer or the readily available media (in
your possession) for an upgrade.

If it were to be any different than this I would be much surprised.

Agree with both the above, though different interpretations of what you are
asking. Use Windows Easy Transfer and then clean install. RC2 won't
qualify you for a lower cost upgrade version.

I would much prefer a clean install than an upgrade from RC2 to RTM

They way that Vista installs (from an image) rather than like previous
versions of Windows that may work better than with previous versions. With
previous versions it was not recommended or supported to upgrade from a beta
release to the RTM release. I haven't seen an official position from
Microsoft yet. As they specifically asked beta testers to test upgrading
from one beta version to another it seems like they were at least thinking
about supporting it.

As I recall the RC2 download screen or installation instructions stated that
it might not be possible to upgrade to the RTM release from RC2 implying
that the intention was that it would be possible. I believe that the RC1
material contained the same statement as to future RC releases and the RTM
release.

You're thinking "Supported - Licence"
I think the OP is thinking "Supported - will this work at a technical
level".

Right you are Robert. Took the different fork in the path to knowledge.
