Hello All,

I have just installed Vista RC2 and so far everything seems to be going well
(knock on wood). One thing I have noticed though is my hard drive never
stops moving. It's a constant thrashing even when doing nothing. It
doesn't seem to have affected the performance of the machine but it is
rather annoying. Any ideas what may be causing this?

TIA

It is likely indexing the drive so search works the way it is designed to.
You just added thousands of files that have to be indexed. After the main
indexing has been accomplished, it will be done "on the fly", as new files
are added.

Thanks,

Sure enough it stopped a few minutes ago.

Hi, Eric.

As Richard said, it is almost certainly Vista's Indexing Service. Depending
on the number and contents of the files and folders on your hard drive(s),
the initial indexing may take a few hours or several days. And the initial
installation of Vista creates lots of new files that need to be indexed.
Indexing progress also depends on how intensively you are using your
computer. If you leave it on overnight, the initial indexing may be done by
morning. Until the indexing is completed, performance will likely be
sluggish and you will notice slow response to key presses and commands.

Once the indexing is done, you should reap the payoff in near-instantaneous
searches for information on your computer. ;<)
