Vista RC1 version question

Hello, I would like to know if the RC1 version will work on my Dell Inspiron
600m laptop, since it currently has 384MB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9000
graphics card. Is my graphics card good enough for Aero? I know I have to put
more RAM in the laptop. Also, since on Microsoft's website they state that
the RC1 version will only work til June 1, 2007. Does that mean that it will
get deleted from my laptop after that date? Does the current RC1 that is
available from Microsoft for download have the latest RC1 build which I see
people say that they are installing, or does it have the old RC1 build. I
think the new one begins with 57.

Thanks.

Legally you can't use RC1 once Vista is released to the public, now
scheduled for late January, 2007.

As your Dell machine already has, presumably, Windows XP installed, you
would really need to install to a seprate partition on your hard drive. This
would mean creating a partition. To do this you need free space. Most
manufacturer's let Windows XP take up 'all' of the hard drive, so if this is
the case with you, you would need to purchase partitioning software - such
as Norton Partition magic or something similar to shrink your original
partition and then create another one. Once a new partition is created (of
the right size) you are then ready to install. You will end up with a dual
boot system which means you can start your pc and then boot to either XP or
Vista - the choice is yours.

As to your questions:

384MB is a little low, you need 512MB or above
Your graphics card will 'not' give you Aero. You need ATI radeaon 9550
minimum
As for the June 1st cut off - the program will just stop working, it will
not delete itself from your pc. You just won't be able to access Vista.
I believe the current build 5728 is available, but you will have to check
the download site.

Hi Terry,

No, it will not get deleted. However, you will not be able to log into
the operating system after that date. You will need to get the Retail
Version to continue using that Desktop and your files.

Thanks for all of your help.

there will almost certainly be a hack so you can use it past may 2007. MS
would almost certainly want you as a beta tester to test it out to see if it
works ;-) Maybe MS will finally create a PID/WGA that is unhackable. I
wouldn't hold my breath on that one as there is one I saw a couple of month
ago that would supposedly reset the 14 day activation period as many times
as you like on beta 2

I'm liking Vista so I will almost certainly buy it. And if you like it you
should buy it, not hack it. My plan is to wait until 30 days or so before
the kill date so MS can get the final bugs out of it.

So MS will allow RC1 5600 users to upgrade to the retail version?

Umm,
Just as a point,
Why would anyone WANT to use beta software after the full version is
released; anyhow?

Jeff

1. It is working well
2. You have a better version (Ultimate) than you are going to be able to
afford.
3. Wait to see if any major problems are reported about the final version.
Bug fixes from RC1 sometimes cause other problems not known or fixed before
RTM that may affect you.

As with any "evaluation" software - at the expiration of time constraint the
software stops functioning (it is not deleted) and is another reason Beta,
or evaluation, software should not be installed on "working" or "production"
computers.- do not get caught up in "versions" of Vista - RC1 is very
good -

#1 Hmmm; interesting; saying then; that beta's are more stable than a RTM?
#2 Just because someone can't afford something; does NOT justify stealing
it(i.e. Hacks) in relation to running beta after expiration.
#3 Operating Systems are not static;they constantly evolve;patches;upgrades
etc.

Jeff

1. No but your beta may be perfectly stable for you. Why risk changes.
2. Never said anything about stealing. Maybe borrowing for a while. :-) I
have posted elsewhere that using after the public release is not allowed by
agreement, even if it works.
3. All software is evolving. I remember Microsoft Money 2005 had a fatal
flaw requiring a fix BEFORE the CD's hit the shelf, and a huge number of
critical fixes in the first two months. Many bugs still remained and were
just allowed to exist by Microsoft as they considered them annoyances. Why
risk a stable system performing the functions you need before you see the
posts about problems that may affect you. Many won't install any operating
system until after the first Service Pack.

<snip>

Your post makes no sense. Why would MS want you to be testing an RC1
release 6 months after it has gone gold? And why would you want to continue
running an RC1 release with all it's bugs?

Do not install Vista on a production or primary use computer. It should
only be installed on a test machine, one in which you are willing to
format/reinstall or restore from an image, if something goes wrong.

Because you are one of those screwed-up individuals who believes you are
"entitled" to having things for free instead of earning them? Just a
guess...

That _would_ explain it.
