I am trying to download a clean copy of windows onto my sony vaio but when it
gets to the download section it says copying files and when that gets to 87%
complete the installation fails what should I do?

Do you mean "download" over the internet? Or, do you mean
"install" as from a DVD? There is a difference between the
two words.

Hi,

Downloading is something you do to capture files from another source,
generally across a network or from other media. What you are doing is
installing, a process used to place an operating system on a computer, or to
place a program within an existing operating system for use by the operator.
You should distinguish between the two, as otherwise you may confuse someone
trying to help you. A failure during the copying process can be caused by
several things:

- You have a bad burn of the .iso file. Reburning at a slower speed can
often help rectify this.
- You have a BIOS- based antivirus scheme active. This should be disabled
during any OS installation.
- You have something blocking the installer's ability to write to the boot
sector. Third party boot software can cause this.
- You have bad sectors or a failing hard drive. Have you run a drive
diagnostic yet?
- Insufficient free space exists for setup to complete. I would allow no
less than 20GB for a general installation.
- Your motherboard may need a BIOS update.
- The partition or file system is corrupt, deleting and recreating it may
help.
- Failing or flakey memory sticks.
