Ok guys I bought a computer from a computer fair 2 years ago thinking that
it had an official version of XP on it only to find out last year mine was
blag which I asked about on here last year. I never went out and bought an
official copy of XP as I knew Vista was out this year so my question is, if
I where to buy an official vista upgrade with licence could I just install
over my unofficial xp which I presume would make me all legal.

No. Vista upgrade will only install over a legal WinXP SP2

Vista has been specifically designed to upgrade only genuine, validated
licenses of earlier operating systems. Anyway, a two year old computer
would be at the very bottom end of Vista hardware requirements; I
wouldn't even try it.

I've seen XP offered for around $100 with a free upgrade to Vista. You might
be better off staying where you are.

Same problem -- if you don't have a legal XP you have nothing to
upgrade *from*.

But I wouldn't be in any hurry to install Vista -- it needs more
memory even than XP, and there are no clear benefits.

so the guy did me over on that

I have a 2gig machine with one gig of memory, ati 9600 pro video card if
this helps

Check your system specs against the requirements. Then decide.
Buy full version Vista since you do not have a valid XP to upgrade from.
