Hi,
My nephew is a pilot of a commercial airline and does frequent trips to
China.
Today he told me that Windows Vista Home Basic is available in China for $
60.00 whereas in my country the Home Basic is sold for $ 100.00
Can someone advise if this version of Vista will be usable only in China or
also elsewhere and will it be in English too or only in Chinese ?
I am talking about Microsoft licenced software and not the pirated one.
I purchased Vista Ultimate for an equivalent of $ 216.00

You can use it anywhere you want but it'll likely be Chinese if the buys it
in China unless the store also specifically sells English versions for
non-chinese speaking customers.

I highly doubt that any version priced at that significant a discount is a
legitimate version. In any case, Microsoft does not have differently priced
versions of any of its software.

Bullsh¡t! In Spain, Vista Retail Ultimate goes for over 800 US Dollars!
Where have you been, hiding under a rock!?

MS significantly lowered the price in China to deter pirating.
There was a discussion here a month or two ago about this.
Not sure what languages though.

What??? LOL.

Retail licences of Vista cost a LOT more in the UK compared to the US.

Also, with the high rate of piracy in China, MS could very well be selling
it cheaper there. It would be stupid of them not to. You know, supply and
demand, maximising profit, etc..

Man Richard you seriously need to price Vista here in Germany sometime.
But here, I'll do it for you.

Vista Ultimate Retail Germany:

http://tinyurl.com/2o4dhz

Cost in EUR: 499
Cost in USD: 679

Vista Ultimate Retail US:

http://tinyurl.com/2q6q99

Cost in USD: 339

So you wanna explain to me one more time how MS does not have differently
priced versions?

These are most likely Vista created for 3rd world countries. It is NOT
likely they will work outside 3rd world countries. I got hold of an Win XP
Pro like that once and never got it to work in the US.

In a free market, anyone can charge anyone else any price they want. Why do
you think used car salesmen have such a bad reputation?

It was less than a month ago that Microsoft announced that they were going
to sell discounted legitimate versions in China. Posted here also, with
link to reliable sources.

With great respect, that is totally incorrect. The price of much Microsoft
software varies considerably in different geographic regions.

For example: Vista is considerably more expensive here in Australia than in
the US, even allowing for currency conversion. In Australia, the retail
price for a new install of Vista Ultimate is AU$750.00 (approx US$620). A
Home Premium Upgrade is AUD $299 (approx US $247). The List prices in the US
are US $399.95 and $159.95, respectively. (Needless to say, this generates a
fair bit of resentment).

Once you escape the solipsistic Black Hole which is American news and
current affairs, it is well-known that Microsoft dropped the price of Vista
in China quite dramatically, to forestall rampant piracy:
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-08/07/content_5448926.htm

If the OP can get a English language copy of Vista in China, I'd say it's a
good deal.

Cheers,

Did you type that with a straight face?

If China's currency is being held at approximately one quarter of its value,
then the Home Basic equivalent price there is over two hundred dollars.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renminbi#Purchasing_power_parity
Citing Wikipedia is dubious, but links are provided there to World Bank and
IMF purchasing power parity estimates that 2 yuan make about 1 dollar.
The exchange rate is roughly 8 yuan to 1 dollar. This would create bargain
prices for Chinese goods everywhere but China, and quad prices for foreign
goods in China, which would tend to spur Chinese economic development.

Who cares what operating system you are running. Just FYI. Someone who
replaces Vista with a server product on the desktop doesn't have a clue what
he/she is doing. Stupid idea. Just FYI. Go to another forum. Stay away
from here, Just FYI.
