Vista PC Invisible on my Network

I have added a new Vista PC to my home network but it is not visible from my
old Xp machine

It has the same Workgroup
I have tried dynamic IP address's provided by my router, and static, neither
make any difference.
I cannot ping the Vista machine from the Xp machine. A "Network not found"
error is returned.
The Vista machine sees the Xp PC , my network store and my Router, and can
ping them all.
I can access the Internet from both the Vista PC and the Xp PC.
I have tried both Public and Private network settings on the Vista PC, they
make no difference. It is left on Private

I am rather disappointed with Vista, it is slow and fussy. This problem
makes it next to useless if I cannot fully use my network!

I would be pleased to hear any suggestions.

A misconfigured firewall program on the Vista machine (Windows
Firewall, Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, etc) could be causing the
problem.

I'm not familiar with the "ping" command giving a "Network not found"
error. Is that really what it says when you ping Vista from Xp? If
so, the error is due to something being configured wrong on Xp.

"Private" is the right network setting on Vista. "Public" would block
access by other computers on the network.

Sorry confused two pieces of information. Ping is giving a 'No reply'
response.
When I try to access the Vista PC from the Xp PC. The Vista PC is listed but
double clicking gives the 'Network not found' error.

One more piece of information.
A friend brought thier Vista Laptop over and after ltering its settings to
suit my network, had no trouble being seen or seeing others on the network,
except my Vista PC !!

Is the error message "The network path was not found"? That means
that XP can't find a specific computer or shared folder on the
network. I'm not familiar with an error message that says "Network
not found" under any circumstances.

Is there an antivirus program on the Vista PC? Some antivirus
programs have firewall components that have to be configured.

Thanks for your comments, I have now found the problem
It is new PC from Dell and they had loaded McAfee on which I had disabled in
favour of my chosen AV software.
I removed McAfee altogether and lo and behold, the PC was visible.

I think that despite being disabled the firewall was still active.

You're welcome. Nice job of finding the problem. Yes, a firewall can
still cause problems when it's disabled. The only way to tell for
sure is to un-install the firewall.
