Vista over XP?

Vista RC 1 is working fine on my computer, but I don't see me coughing up a
couple hundred dollars when XP works so well.

You are not alone in this. There are going to be a great many people who for different reasons decide to stick to XP and not get Vista until the times comes to buy a new computer.

I'm in the same category. I purchased a new Dell desktop PC three
months ago, running XP Home SP2. After relentless tinkering, I finally have
the machine configured and working the way I want. Vista looks somewhat
interesting, but there is no way I will upgrade this computer and
potentially mess things up. My blood pressure is high enough.

I'm running vista beta rc1 and office beta 2007 as my primary operating
system. Its very stable, and graphics are cool. Its easy to get around and a
little easier to use I think. No compelling reason to upgrade but not bad for
$3.00

I think for most people, the question becomes, for between 100-200 dollars per computer, is the cost of upgrading justified or not. Most people do not have several hundred dollars that they spend for something that might not make a big difference on how they are using their computers. Since most people just surf the Internet, do email, chat online, and perhaps pay bills online, they could probably do all that running a Linux distribution, Firefox and Thunderbird, and Open Office for a total cost of nothing.

Then don't upgrade.
There is more than "works so well".
Most people have no need to upgrade to Vista now, the same as when Windows
XP was released 6 years ago.

As with any new program or operating system, only invest in the newer
version only if you can determine there is sufficient benefit for your
situation.

Most will probably upgrade when getting a new computer and get Windows Vista
with it and will not need Vista sooner.
Since Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years, there is
no need to upgrade simply because Vista is released.
