Another lame news post. Shall we break it down again?

"In the DOT's case, the ban was imposed because certain applications
essential to the agency's function won't run on Vista."

"certain applications"? So they're concerned with THIRD PARTY apps that
don't work. Of course! I further have no doubt that some of these are
custom.

My company is the same boat. We have some users on Vista as a test however
we can't move forward until some drivers issues are cleared up as well as
application issues.

Do companies in the same boat publicly address the issue as a "ban?" That's
absurd.

"than making its apps Vista-compatible."

More custom talk.

Hum...they're complaining that their windows apps wont work with Vista yet
they are considering a switch to Apple? Because their windows apps work on
OSX? Something doesn't add up. As addressed earlier, many people on OS9
had to wait a while to upgrade to OSX. So this switch they are considering
is fruitless.

The same reason DOT is not switching is the same reason many others are
still using Windows 2000 today. You need to pick the OS that suits your
needs. If you "bought" into a solution that is not upgradeable then oops!
Time to fire someone.

I think the federal govt, like to use the word "ban", though I think they
probably said it in terms of "Employees are currently banned from
installling XYZ".

I know the department of Veterans Affairs had a "BAN" on Windows XP a few
years back. Which some how got muddled into "Contractors and Vendors are not
allowed to connect to the VA network if they are running Windows XP"

This was while the VA and Microsoft argued over Volume pricing, so the "Ban"
was to prevent IT shops from loading it up ahead of time.

In this case, it does sound like the DOT might be tired os Microsoft and
want to move over to something else(which is what the DVA was mulling on the
XP ban)

I will say that I think (my personal opinion) is that Micrsoft seems to be
biting the hand that fed them. I was in the Army when Windows NT 3.1 and
3.51 was hitting the market. Microsoft was kissing our butts all over the
place to get us to install NT versus Novell. Basically gave away lots of
copies of NT 3.51 (as they desperately wanted to get in bed with the Federal
Govt) Now all I hear is the Federal Govt complaining about how microsoft is
killing them with their pricing.

I think in this case, the DOT (and probably other Govt agencies) are asking,
Do we really need Vista ? The answer is probably no, then they ask, what
will it cost to make or Apps Compatible with Vista, some says a number that
probably too high for the current budgets and so they say "No" to Vista.

It's not like it makes Vista a bad OS, it's just like what Justin said , You
use what suits you
