Vista, mail, missing messages

I have Vista.
Windows mail has worked fine for 6 weeks, suddenly it tells me that it is
downloading mail, however, it isn't appearing anywhere in any of my mail
folders. Where is it, how do I get it back, and how can I stop it?
Someone please help me!!!!
 
Jay,

Did you customize your current view by chance and accidentally changed
"show" all messages over to "hide" all messages? Go to View, Current View,
Customize Current View and see what settings you have.

I know that I haven't done that because sometimes the messages come through...
Earlier today Windows mail told that it was downloading 14 messages, I had
none of those in my folders. Yet just 10 minutes ago it downloaded two
messages to my inbox. I really don't understand what happened to those other
14 messages.
Any more ideas ????
 
Did you look in the Junk E-mail folder and the Deleted items folder?
 
yes, I've looked in every folder, but alas, cannot find any of the 14
messages...

Very strange. Any possibility that you are running incompatible
security software like McAfee or Norton antivirus?
