Vista Mail as opposed to Outlook 2002

I have a problem that appears Microsoft are never going to address. My
Outlook 2002 wont remember passwords and I have 27 email accounts so it is a
real pain as you may understand.

So, I am thinking about changing over to Vista Mail and I wondered if any of
the more adept at Windows Mail might know if it has things such as
syncronising, calendar with appointments and such. I have looked and of
course havent seen it and dont expect it but am still asking in case I just
missed it. Thanks.

As a user of Outlook and Windows Mail I suspect that Windows Mail is not
going to meet your calendaring needs as well as Outlook does. I would
suggest trouble shooting Outlook to determine the problem and it would
likely be best to post your problem on one of the Outlook groups.

I know when I am at my office there seems to be a server based rule that
prevents me from saving my Exchange password. What type of accounts are
these 27 accounts (IMAP, POP3, Exchange)? How are you connecting to the
Internet (home LAN, Work LAN, etc)?

Have you tried deleting an email account and then re-creating it in Outlook
to see if the password then sticks?

Have you tried creating a new Outlook Profile and then creating an email
account in it to see if the password sticks? If this works it may be your
Outlook profile that has become corrupt.

I'm sure it must be frustrating but before giving up on Outlook post more
details about what you have tried so others can try to help you out.

I think the issue is the version of Outlook. Outlook used the protected
storage interfaces to store passwords and these are no longer supported in
Vista. Also there were certain Outlook Express related components that
Outlook required, and so they might be what are causing some of the issues.

Bottom line being that older versions of Office may not be supported in
Vista.

The Outlook experts can supply better and more detailed information.

I have given up on Outlook 2002. Every indication is that it is unable to
store passwords under Vista and that there will not be a fix in the
foreseeable future.

In my case, I had switched from OE to OL primarily due to the 2GB "bug"
which plagued OE for so many years and bit me more than once. Since I
didn't need or use OL's calendar functions and Windows Mail has resolved the
2GB issue, it seemed reasonable to forget about OL and switch to WM.

Working fine so far. Of course, it's only been a couple of days... :)

No, you basically explained it all already ;-)

Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 are the only versions that are being supported
on Windows Vista. This is reasonable since Windows Vista has been released
after extended support for Outlook 2002/XP stopped in Summer 2006.

If you're having issues with Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 after you have
upgraded from Windows XP take a look here;

I suspected the same, too but I had to ask in case I missed something. I
have been troubleshooting and an MVP on the Outlook newsgroup seems to think
Outlook 2002 isnt supported by MS any longer thus I either have to pay for
an upgrade or put up with it the way it is.

All POP3 on my domain.
Have you tried deleting an email account and then re-creating it in
Outlook to see if the password then sticks?

Yep. Makes no difference. Even installed Outlook 2002 on another machine
that didnt have it (XP) to check out the registry settings and Vista seems
to have them the same.
Have you tried creating a new Outlook Profile and then creating an email
account in it to see if the password sticks? If this works it may be your
Outlook profile that has become corrupt.

I hadnt thought of that so will try it. Thanks for that.

Everything you said has been tried excepting the profile. Nothing you do
from within Outlook 2002 to attempt to make it retain passwords actually
does a thing.

OK that is most likely the case but so far as I am aware, Outlook 2003 does
exactly the same thing yet it works with Vista.
Bottom line being that older versions of Office may not be supported in

According to an MVP in the Outlook newsgroup it appears that is the case yet
MS is supporting W2K which is older.
The Outlook experts can supply better and more detailed information.

Actually, having been there for a while trying that, I have to say that no
they cant, in that newsgroup.

"MS is supporting W2K which is older."
They simply support a platform longer than an application. It's up to
Microsoft to decide their support lifecycles. Fact remains; Outlook 2002 is
unsupported on Windows Vista and Microsoft, very likely, will not fix the
issues with running Outlook 2002 on Windows Vista.

Depends a bit on what you want to hear. We provided you the answer; we can't
make you like it. If you want to know which line number in the Outlook code
is causing the incompatibility contact Microsoft directly.

1) Yes I know it is their decision.
2) They never bothered to announce this problem for those about to upgrade
so imagine the fun with 27 email accounts that no longer remember their
passwords per session.
3) Would fixing the password issue via a non-critical update REALLY be that
hard for them? Eg, they surely expect to be in the bad books for a while as
it happens every time a new Windows comes out. You would think that such a
bad problem would be something they would address if only for the positive
publicity but yet, I know, this is Earth, not the planet of wonders.

No, I was correct. They cant help which was what was put to me. All you get
it "buy more to fix your problem" as the only fix. Those werent the exact
words of course but that was the advice.
