Vista Mail and updates error in RC1

Installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions of RC1 in separate boxes along
with XPx64 and XP dual boots. Neither of the Vistas would access updates or
allow Mail to successfully access the pop3 server.

After many hours of messing around without success, decided to try Virtual
PC (from MS Connect). After installing VPC in Vista, both the Mail and
updates problem solved, and both are now working. Have to assume that the
networking install in VPC 'gave' Vista a portal in which to work.

Anyone with a technically correct answer to this? Thanks
 
VPC would not have provided any services to the host OS. Something else
might be going on.
 
Thanks for your response, Colin. I figured if anyone would know, you would
the one. At one time I thought the satellite modem may have blocked the ports
but there are more than one port involved.
