I am also in the market for a laptop. From what I've gathered-an Intel
dual-core with 1 Gb of RAM and a new gpu with 128 or higher will work? My
question is? Would it be better to go to 64bit processing or will 32bit work
fine?

The new MacBook Pro seems to score highest in some of the tests I saw
recently when updating the GPU with ATI's beta drivers. This is using
BootCamp to partition the drive.

To get a 64-bit notebook now, you would looking at AMDs Turion, since they
are the only mobile laptop chips available at the moment. I would wait until
the second half of this year when Intel releases the Merom chips with 64-bit
instructions. I am also not sure if the sockets on the present Core Duo
chips are upgradable, they are not on the Mac Book Pro, so I would assume
the same from generic notebook vendors too. As for GPU, try and get the
fastest as possible, since Vista will require a good card to run the the 3D
Aero interface.

I've been told that the Mac Minis have socketable chips and have heard that
they can be swapped. If that is true, buy the cheap Core Solo unit and
swamp out with a 64-bit (once they become cheaper). :-)

Avoid Mac Mini's - they're so small, you can barely get your hands in there
and there's no space to upgrade with it.

<sigh> although its speculation, he did say it is upgradable. So why not
purchase one if it currently meets your needs and is within your budget? Not
all of us have the cash to splurge on a MacBook Pro, iMac or PowerMac. The
easiest component also to upgrade is the memory modules, as mmmmark noted
the chip is possibly socketable which could be upgraded to Intels mobile
64-bit chip Merom (future version of the core duo).
