I have a hp Pavillion a1640n with 2g of ram, 250GB hard drive, and an ati
1300x pro series video card and my os is xp media center addition. I got the
express upgrade for windows vista home premium and i try to run it. I ran
the advisor and everything is fine. During the installation, it stops
everytime at 32%-gathering files and the error box says this "windows has
encounted an error and must quit the installation" thats it. no error code
or anything. I have tried installing it several times and the installation
fails at the exact same point everytime. All of my drivers and my BIOS are
up to date and current. I do not understand what is going on, can somebody
help me?

It may be that your installation disk is bad. (Any notable scratches?).
Can you get a replacement for the disk? I had this happen to me, pretty
much as you describe, and a different disk solved my problem.

Hi,

Make sure that all programs are disabled, in particular your antivirus
software (which it is actually better to uninstall and later reinstall).

for some reason, my computer was installed with windows xp professional, even
though it loads up as media center edition. SO i just had to do a
destructive system recovery with the XP disks and then run a clean install of
Vista, everything works now, thanks for help though
