Mike

I have just built my first pc everything went smoothly and all boots up ok.
but I cannot get vista to install. (I tried my old copy of xp pro and that
installs fine)

The problem I have with Vista (premium 32) is everything seems to be
installing ok until I get about 3/4 of the way through the "Completing
Installation" part I then get very little hard drive or dvd activity and
then after about 60 minutes the pc reboots and I get told that the
installation as failed.

here is an approx rundown of what is happening in each process

Copying files... This is fine
Expanding Files... This is fine
Installing Features.. This is fine
Installing Updates... This is fine
Completing Installation... This is the problem the progress bar get to a
bout 3/4 of the way across and then I get a proper reboot and then after its
rebooted I get the message "starting windows for the first time" I then get
back to the same screen but the progress bar remains at about 3/4 of the way
across and I get the problem as mentioned above.

Any help is much appreciated could the problem be with the build of my
system is their something I should alter in the bios. or could the vista dvd
be faulty?

Cheers for any help

We need a lot more information than that. Some hardware component in your
system is incompatible with windows Vista. That's not surprising. Vista
drivers are very flaky, many in a kind of pre-alpha phase at the moment. As
you are adventurous enough to beta-test this new OS for Microsoft, and
willing to pay for the privilege, now you get to learn some of the hidden
costs. Basically, you need to research drivers, simplify your hardware
setup and try again.

Download Vista drivers for every hardware component. If there are not vista
drivers for a particular hardware component, REMOVE that component and (at
least temporarily) replace it with something that is confirmed to be vista
compatible. Even if you find vista drivers for everything, do the initial
Vista install with just mainboard, one stick of RAM, ONE hard drive, ONE DVD
drive and one video card. No other expansion cards, and no external
peripherals connected to the system, either.

If you post your specific hardware components, we could probably figure out
what is causing you headaches. There is something about your hardware that
vista doesn't like. -Dave

You should have run the Vista Upgrade Advisor, that's what it is for.
Download and run it and see if any of your hardware has a problem.
Mike.

Thanks for the replys

Its now fixed, I updated the motherboard with the latest bios, it then
installed fine and is currently working well

I was going to recommend just that until I saw your reply because I had a
friend that had the same problem. Had one computer that took ten minutes to
boot until we updated the Bios.
