So I told vista to do a clean install to drive F: a blank drive. Instead it
decided to install on my main drive C: I can see my files are still intact
on my old drive by running it as a slave. So is there any way to save my old
data?

Vista only went through the first stage of the 5 part install and froze.
Should I attempt to repair my drive with the Windows XP CD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you already backed up all important data?

If you can see the data, it is probably still intact.
After you have verified all data is backed up, try installing again.

In the future ALWAYS have back-ups of all important data.

You can run some OS (Knoppix, for ex) from CD or FlashDrive and move/copy
files you need. Vista RC1 5600 also has some tools to recover files - not
sure, though, already forgot about 5600:(

well I can SEE my data, when I boot from that HD it starts Vista, but it says
it cannot resume installation. I just want to know HOW I can write over the
Vista data so that it will boot in XP.

There is a brief screen that pops up but it is very quick while Vista is
loading. I thought it said to start normal Windows or something else.

I am not sure what the screen is.
If there are problems sometimes a screen will offer several choices such as
Normal and Safe Mode, but that screen is on for a while and easy to reads
all options.
If that is the screen, choose "Last known good configuration"
Otherwise can you tell exactly what is putting up the brief screen, Windows
or some 3rd party product?

If you just want to start over with Windows XP:
First be sure all data is backed-up on CD or another drive etc.
Then follow the appropriate procedures to install Windows XP.
If Windows XP came with the computer, follow the directions in the manual
and/or contact the manufacturer for details.
