After two and a half hours on the phone to tech support yesterday and two
hours today I was told that the product key in the package was meant for
Vista Ultimate instead of Home Premium. They said that they could not create
a key and I needed to return the software to the retailer where I bought
it.....of course their answer was that they do not accept software returns
once the package has been opened.....so I guess I'm screwed.

So what's the problem? You apparently were satisfied with the price you
paid so I'm guessing that's not the issue. Vista Ultimate has all the
features of Home Premium and more. So enter the Vista Ultimate key and
install as Vista Ultimate.

Just enjoy your new copy of Ultimate. All the dvd's are alike, so if you
have a product key for Ultimate you are the proud owner of Vista Ultimate.
That is, unless you typed the phrase "meant for Vista Ultimate instead of
Home Premium" backwards. A key for VHP when you paid for VU would be a
problem.

Well, he should be able to install it with the disk he already has.

That's not you being screwed, that is you benefiting from their mistake. It
seems the copy you purchased is much more valuable than what you paid.

I not sure how he got to the point where he found he had the wrong key if
all the disks are the same, it seems he would have gone thru the install
process and then found that he Ultimate instead of Premium installed.

I think the install asks you which version you are installing. The OP
needs to try installing again, but tell it Ultimate this time instead of
Premium.
