Below is a copy of an e-mail I got from my daughter who just got a new
system a couple days ago with Vista installed. I do not really know a
lot about Vista since I am running 98se yet. Anyhelp or suggestions
would be appreciated.

I could be wrong but told her if she tryed to back it a 98 box she
might end up with more problems yet.

Here is her letter:

***************************

Was wondering if you heard anything bad about Windows Vista? This
thing is extremely slow and freezes up nonstop. There's alot of weird
kinks in their system. I've heard that it's not so good because it's
so new. It's been downloading updates on/off all night, which I
wouldn't think there'd already be updates, because it's brand new.

Was wondering if maybe tomorrow or Monday night or something you & mom
can come over. I was thinking if it's possible & you have the disks,
maybe you could wipe out Windows Vista and install Windows 98 and
Microsoft Office on here? Then I'll just return the Microsoft Office
2007, unless you can install that with Windows 98. This is
ridiculous, I have high-speed internet, so it shouldn't be messing up.
But it's not the internet it's internet explorer and all of that
freezing nonstop.

I have a backup or recovery disk for Windows Vista, so if I'm thinking
right, if we install Windows 98 and it's still the same, we could
always put Windows Vista back on the computer? Not sure.

But I was just wondering if you would take a look at this. This
should be really fast, but it's the whole computer in Windows that's
slow, not the internet. So I'm wondering if it's Windows Vista that's
acting up? Plus we have no spyware or anti-virus protection, I know
you have alot of that, so maybe if you do we could put it on here?

Just asking. Maybe tomorrow I"ll look up Windows Vista and see what
other people think of it... because I hate it. I know it's newer, but
I'd rather have Windows 98 if it means it'd be faster.

Maybe if you guys can come over and you bring the CDs for it, we can
check it out, see if maybe it's my error and I hooked something up
wrong?

She does know that a computer should meet the minimum requirements of the OS
it is running, right? The OS doesn't run (too much) slower than XP. Could
she possibly not have the minimum requirements?

If the system came with Vista - tell her to return it. It should work
out of the box. Don't even waste your time trying to fix it.

Vista will be a culture shock after Windows 98.. it is a very different
animal, as XP was.. the learning curve will be steep, but there are manuals
appearing for Vista.. she should get one.. you might also want to point her
in the direction of this newsgroup, but if she could not handle it, then she
should most definitely get a manual.. likewise for Office 2007 which is an
extraordinarily good office suite, but which differs greatly from all before
it..

The machine will be slow for a day or two while file indexing is carried
out.. XP was the same as it slowly built up its prefetch file.. she should
not mess with the system at all.. there is the usual Windows help locally
(help files on the system itself) and on the internet, but her first line
help is the vendor from whom the system was bought..

The concept of installing Win 98 should be dismissed immediately as there
are probably no Win 98 drivers for some of the onboard devices..

Tell her to take it back.

What ever you do, do not try to install Win98 on that new
machine. Please.

If she did just purchase this new system with Vista pre-installed, her first
step should be to contact support from whoever sold her the computer. They
must guarantee that the system works out-of-the-box. They can talk her
through some procedures to try and track down the problems.

There really isn't enough information from your original post to make any
suggestions about fixing the problems she is having.

Thanks for reply and help. All I know is what she told me about it in
the e-mail I posted here. I know nothing about Vista. I passed along
the suggestions about calling Best Buy (Where she got it) and the
remark to give it a couple days to set itself up or whatever it was
someone said.
