Hi,

I cannot find winhlp32.exe on my machine.

Yet, I can use 'Help and Support', I can click on the links and get
the information.

How can I achieve this without the exe file?

Thanks

winhlp32.exe is for the old versions of Windows. Vista uses a newer
scheme.

Or else it's the other way around :-)

I just looked. The newer help file I tried won't open with winhlp32.exe.

Gene,

Thanks for responding.

That seems to explain it, winhlp32.exe must have been replaced by a
'newer scheme'. I wonder what it is?

Best wishes.

I looked at the shortcut the other day when I posted my first reply; I
didn't find a clue and I was too lazy to really search.

When I first started with Vista, I was told that I had to download
winhlp32 (from Microsoft for free) to be able to use the old-style help
files. I think it was an error pop-up somewhere in Windows, but to tell
the truth I just don't recall now how I learned this.

Anyway, you made me feel guilty :-) ... so I just browsed through my
C:\Windows directory and found hh.exe, which identifies itself as
"Microsoft HTML Help Executable". That's surely it - it triggered a
feeling of familiarity.

hh.exe is on my machine too.

Don't click on it, nothing happens.

Best wishes.

I didn't click on it, since I expect it to be used only when one clicks
on Help in a menu.

But I just opened a command window in C:\Windows and typed hh /? and it
opened a window with a directory listing.

My next step was to find a .chm file and open it by typing hh
whatever.chm. I got a help screen. I also got the same screen by
double-clicking the file in a Windows Explorer window, or by choosing
Open with and selecting "Microsoft HTML Help Executable", which we now
know is hh.

If instead I try to open it with winhlp32.exe, I get "The xxx file is
not a Windows Help file, or the file is corrupted".

OTOH, .hlp files open in winhlp32 but fail in hh.

That is a pretty exhaustive and conclusive study, if you ask me.

Well, what the heck - I had fun, and it might have been the only useful
thing I did yesterday :-)

I found it useful, maybe others will as well. Part of the knowledge.

Keep reading the posts.
