Hello...I am trying to understand the relationship between Vista and the
hardware. I recently bought a Laptop that came with Vista preloaded, but
unfortunately most of my components don't work with it, and I cannot easily
network to my XP computer. I would like to use Vista eventually, but not
right now.

Can I reformat this machine (or any Vista machine) and rebuild with XP? I
have a feeling that I cannot, and the physical hardware is involved somehow,
but I don't know how.

If I can find any laptops out there that still have XP, how do I now if the
hardware will be "Vista Ready?"

Many thanks in advance for any clarity provided!

I also bought a laptop with Vista Premium installed and have XP on my
desktop. If by "components" you mean software, it's a matter of waiting for
the software developers to catch up. The oem hardware on your laptop should
be at least adequate up to the Vista standards.

I solved the networking problem by buying a $29 USB-USB Direct Net Link
Cable (RadioShack) which connects both computers physically through USB
ports, and you transfer data simply by Drag & Drop. I use that method for
printing, scanning, etc. too rather than getting peripherals compatible with
Vista too.

Hope that is of some help. Frogman

You can but .....

Notebook computers use many utilities and files that are specific to a
model and many manufacturers are not issuing earlier version OS (eg XP)
of those files for a model delivered with VISTA on it.

So don't start it without first doing the research with the manufacturer
for your specific model and finding out if you can download these files
-- like for power mangagement and function keys.

What make and model is your laptop?

You can still find XP installed laptops on the websites of some
manufacturers -- Dell and Lenovo/IBM come to mind.

But you can't be sure that VISTA-compatible files will exist for them
either. Once you have bought it the VISTA upgrade advisor should give you
some guidance but it's not infallible.

And you haven't even touched on the external hardware like All-in-one
printers ......

What exactly do you mean by "... most of my components don't work with
it..."?
