Hi Everyone,

Before I start, my knowledge of computing is home use + a little bit.

My problem is as follow

I have just upgraded two of my PCs to Vista, so far so good

The one PC is my media server and HTPC (HFX) with a huge hard drive and
therefore the repository of all my fotos, music and home movies. This drive
has two partitions c and d. c is the system directory and d is all multimedia
directory with 3 folders MOVIES, MUSIC and PHOTOS (in my home language of
course) These three folders I have shared over the home network that I have
created

The other PC is my home laptop, an LG P1 (also Vista) and I use this PC to
manage my content (fotos from my Nokia Phone digital camera et al) . The
thing is when I open my network explorer I see the shared files BUT I cannot
access them.

I have tried to apply my XP knowledge into solving the problem but I guess
that is a bridge too far.

Please help... Paint by numbers instructions would be greatly appreciated!

You may want to create the same user in both computers. Or this post may
help.

Vista common issue - can see but ...and one xp from the vista however one is
prompting for a user name and ... so that you may want to create same
username and password on the both computers. ...

Fantastic thanks Bob, I will give this a shot tonight and see if it works.
Another question. The third PC on my home network is an XP Thinkpad x61.
Would I need to do the same with this machine?

It seems to be a rather complicated solution to something that worked by
default in the XP environment

Basically, make sure ALL computers have the same workgroup name.

In vista Network and Sharing:
Network discovery ON
Network set to private
File sharingON
Public folder sharing ON (vista's public folder is XP's old shared docs)
Password protected OFF( if you turn it on you will be asked for a username
and password when you try and access vista from XP machine. The way around,
if you want password protect, is to create identical accounts on all
machines; I don't like that!)

Also, run the XP home network file and printer sharing wizard again with all
comps set up with the same workgroup name.
