I got into vista and got it to install. Was trying to change it to a higher
resolution from 1024 to 12xx and well now i get a message saying this
resolution is not supported across the screen in vista. How do I change
back to 1024? I tried to in safe mode but when I rebooted the message was
still there.

It's your monitor displaying this message. Windows is still running fine -
you just can't see it.

Boot to safe mode and change the resolution to something low, like 800x600,
and also make sure that the refresh rate is 60. That should be enough to get
you back into the normal desktop.

Nahh... if you can load up with "Last good configuration" on the boot menu -
that solved it for me when I screwed it up :o)

You're not able to change those properties in Safe Mode - try the "Last
Known Good Configuration" from the boot manager before Vista loads, that
worked for me.

Of course it's not guaranteed - but it did work for me when their appeared
to be no other solution. To get the boot menu up, it's one of the Function
keys, but if you switch the power off half way through the boot screen then
on again, should come up with the available option :o)

Go to Safe Mode and make a change to the resolution there. It should retain
the settings after a reboot. Especially if you drop it to the minimum
settings in Safe Mode.

I can't even display the desktop. All I get is the message I indicated and a
black screen, the mouse and keyboard won't respond.

I really don't think you can change display settings in safe mode though...

I've tried changing it in safe mode, I haven't tried doing a restore point
but the problem is I can't get to a restore point because I can only see the
message when I boot to Vista.

I've got the same "video mode not supported" problem. Seems to be triggered
when trying to start media center amongst other things. I suggest when you
get Vista reinstalled, or finally get back to your desktop, you create at
least 3 new administrator accounts. I have always found that logging into one
of these fresh accounts clears the problem.

I also tried the "Last Known Good Configuration" and this didn't work for me
but there is an option in there called something like "Set to low resolution"
which allowed me to get into Vista to adjust my resolution.
