Hi,

Windows Vista Ultimate (Final release - MSDN)

Windows vista set to 800x600 resolution works fine. However, when i try
setting the same to 1024x768 resolution my screen stretches vertically, and
i cannot see start menu/taskbar?

Any help will be appreciated.

I have a latest Acer Travelmate 4052NLCI Laptop with 40GB HDD, and 768MB RAM

Thanks,and Regards,
Praveen

Perhaps a video adapter driver issue, and drivers for Vista may not be
available until after the official release.

Check with the video chip or card manufacturer's WEBsite, for possible
updates.

It would be easier to help you if we knew:
1. What is the native resolution of your Laptop screen.
2, What your laptops video card/chip is and how much on board memory it has.
3. If you have run Winupdate with your RTM release since I understand that
there are 11,000 drivers available with it in addition to the 19,000 that
are contained in the acutal RTM release.
4. Prior to upgrading to VISTA Ultimate RTM did you have any problem running
1024x768 on your laptop and if not what OS was it running?

Thanks for replying...

Q1: native resolution supported by my Laptop (Acer Travelmate 4052NLCI) is
1024x786 and 800x600
Q2: Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation -
XDDM) and 64MB Shared Memory
Q3: I had run Windows Update, and i have downloaded, and installed latest
INTEL driver for the video card without any luck.
Q4: Before VISTA, i had Windows XP Professional and it was running fine
under 1024x768 resolution.

If you require any more details, please let me know the same

Praveen

A fixed pixel display only has one native resolution just like an electric
light sign on the freeway. If you select a resolution other than the native
resolution the graphics card just scales the image of to fit the native
resolution by adding pixels(up) or deleting pixels (down scaling).
From your problem description it appears that your native resolution is
800x600 and that the MS supplied WDDM drivers in Vista for your card were or
still are doing a poor job of downscaling the 1024x768 image.
After you downloaded latest Vista drivers from the Intel drivers and you go
into device manager does it show the Intel drivers instead of the MS WDDM
drivers. If not although they are installed it appears that Vista has not
started using them.

Thanks for replying JW.

BTW, my laptop is just 8 months old

Acer TravelMate 4052NLCi
Intel Pentium M 726 processor (1.6GHz, 400MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)
15" XGA TFT LCD
40GB HDD
DVD/CD-RW combo
768MB DDR
802.11 b/g wireless LAN

Looking @ the configuration i guess that vista should support atleast
1024x768 resolution.

Further, the driver installed i guess its windows vista driver, and not
intel. I was not able to find any latest INTEL video drivers for Vista.

However, the driver which vista is installed for my Laptop TFT/LCD is
"Digital Flat Panel (1024x768 60Hz)"

Praveen

Are you sure this is the model no. of your laptop and not your battery?
Doing a search on Google finds only batteries.
Acer also does not list this model (Acer TravelMate 4052NLCi).

Hopefully Intel will soon release their own drives for your chipset for
Vista. I would try WinUpdate under Vista and check the Intel Website again
this Thursday the 30th since the business versions of Vista are being
released on that date and I expect a lot of drivers suddenly to be made
available on Vendor WebSites.

Actually my laptop model comes under Acer TravelMate 4050 series.

Praveen, firstly you're not the only one with this particular problem. I as well have the tm 4050.

I shall start from the beginning.

With XP SP2 installed on my 4050 from the start, I was bored one weekend and went about updating all the drivers. The last driver I updated was the vga. I went to intel's website and downloaded the latest for the 82855 chipset.

To my surprise the drivers @ 1024x768 stretched beyond the screen. I had no problems with 800x600. Keep in mind that these were with the latest drivers Intel has for the 82855. They've been there for quite some time now (still are) so I don't believe the drivers are bugged.

I then went to Acer's website and downloaded vga drivers for the 4050. Their 3 years old btw.

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_2350.html

Intel VGA driver 6.14.10.3691 are the only drivers that allow 1024*768.

That was that for then. Everything worked so I had no reason to worry.

About 2 weeks ago, I got vista from workout and tried it out on the 4050. Again to my surprise, the native vista drivers had problems with 1024*768. Only 800x600 works fine.

I downloaded 6.14.10.3691 and through XP SP2 compatibility mode got it installed. While after rebooting I got 1024x768 working, vista refused to enable the vga card in system manager claiming it had issues with the drivers. This didn't bother me because as I said 1024*768 was working fine.

It was only the next day that videos were very sluggish and I couldn't even enable screen savers because my drivers "were incompatible with direct3d"
I believe hardware acceleration was disabled.

I called Acer and after explaining to them the situation, they got someone to call me back, who a.)questioned why I was updating drivers, b.)suggesting I not go to the respective manufactures website (eg. intel...) but instead get all from Acer's website.

Honestly their support are useless and rude.

Finally he assured me that there will be no support for vista on the 4050.

I find this extremely weird cause while vista might not support the Acer 4050. Vista does have support for every bit of hardware found in the 4050...

I'll never buy from Acer again.

I hope someone here finds out how to get vga working in the 4050.

Hi,

Any updates on my Video/Graphics Card driver update?

Since, i have waited for nearly 1.3 months :( without proper graphics
display.

I am getting a ugly screen (streched virtically), which i change my graphics
resolution to 1024x768. However, 800x600 works ok.

FYI, my graphics card supports 1024x768, u can read my laptop hardward list
in the following messages.

Please help.....

Not to be a wet blanket, but has anyone mentioned that your laptop appears
to be a bit old and lacking in resources, such as RAM?
I believe MS recommends a minimum of 512 Megabytes of memory and you have
256? Is it possible that your video chip uses some of the main memory,
making higher resolutions impossible?
Your source for Vista drivers is the laptop maker (Acer) first, then the
video chip supplier (Intel). Have you contacted those parties for drivers,
or to ask if they intend to supply new drivers?
Looking on the Intel site:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-009479.htm

reveals no Vista drivers for your 82852.

Thanks for replying....

Actually i have 512+256 MB RAM installed in my laptop.

Praveen

Thanks,

However, going thorugh the link, i found that my graphics chipset is
supported for windows vista by INTEL!

Here is the text from the link:

Q3: Is Intel providing support for WDDM drivers for Intel Graphics Media
Accelerator 900 (Intel GMA 900) on Intel® 915 Express chipset-based
platforms?
A: Intel will provide support for WDDM drivers beginning with the Intel® 945
Express chipset family and beyond.

Windows Vista is supported on the Intel® 845G, 865G, 915G Express desktop
chipsets and 852/855GM mobile chipsets running XP drivers for Intel
graphics. Windows Vista will install on these platforms, but advanced
features such as Windows Aero will not be enabled as Vista drivers using
WDDM are required for Windows Aero.

You can see that 852/855 mobile chipset is supported

OK, but unfortunately the extra RAM doesn't solve your lack of video driver
issue with the Intel 915 model 82852 chip.
If Acer and/or Intel don't provide a Vista driver, you're stuck with
whatever comes in Vista. Note Q5 and Q6 in the link supplied in JW's
response.

I guess their is some confusing here... sorry thats my mistake...

My laptop graphics card is

Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation -
XDDM) and 64MB Shared Memory

and not 915 series.... as mentioned earlier..
