Is it possible to create a disk that has all of my files and downloaded programs to be used in case I need to reinstall. I want a safety net for all my pictures and word documents that I have stored on hard drive and don't want to loose them.

Hi,

If your using Vista (which I'm assuming that you are, because of the title lol) depending on what version you have - I think it only comes with Business and Ultimate, there is a back-up and restore option, which will back-up everything on your system, OS and applications.
 
As well as the suggestion above it's a good idea to save all stand alone files, pix, movies, mp3's etc, to a CD or DVD as data.

Never rely on a hard disk as a storage media, they're very prone to failure.
