Hi,
Establishing a PPTP VPN connection to a client's network from a Vista
Business desktop disables browsing and accessing files on my local network
(asks for credentials).
Internet traffic is also dreadfully slow.
What is going on here with Vista? (i.e. not same with XP)
Brian

For the security reason, the Vista VPN send all traffics to the default gateway in the remote network. You may want to disable this feature. This how to may help (it is for XP as the same as Vista).

routing issues on vpnCan ping VPN server only but not other resources Can't access the internal server when remote client establishes VPN Can't access the Internet while using ...

Thanks Robert, the article suggests that the Default Gateway is the key, but
XP did NOT display this same characteristic.

I will check it out and post here the result.

Best regards

Disabling the "Use default gateway" option has resolved the immediate problem
thanks Robert.

This is counter-intuitive setting when your local adaptor is set (in Vista)
to local access and Internet, and the remote VPN is set to local only, but
Internet traffic is routed via... the VPN!

Hi Brian,
Your connection might be a lot faster when you disable "Use default
gatewayon remote network" as internet traffic will no longer go over VPN
however, you should still be prompted for creds when accessing files on
local network. The latter is because Vista uses only cached VPN creds and
doesnt fall back to creds used in the local domain. The workaround is to
specify the full FQDN name of the resource.

thanks

Hi Aanand
The Internet traffic is now routed correctly (direct from "normal" gateway),
also when accessing local network, I am no longer asked for credentials - no
FQDN required.
Why this is not the default mystifies me... (but thanks for the contribution!)
Brian
